An HTPC question.

Thread Starter
I need to build a budget HTPC, for ripped blu-rays/HD movies.

Here's what I'm thinking:

Build a new one. Or just use my Sig rig.

Thoughts? And I do prefer the second option.

Your Signature Rig is a perfect system for an HTPC.

If possible swap that card for a GT 430

I see. But does the fact that it only has 512mb affect the quality of the output?

Build a new rig and make your sig rig the HTPC, get a nice HTPC case and you're good to go.

Nope, not at all. Hell you can play 1080p with onboard graphics (my old one was running a HD3200) with only 256mb assigned.

recommends the 430 as it's quieter, uses less power and runs cooler.

I see. Do I need to buy a sound card?

My GTS 250 already has an HDMI port.

Good idea starwalker

OP,
Your sig system is more than enough for a HTPC. The only issue that might arise is trying to get audio out of the HDMI from the Nvidia gts 250 video card. A quick google search will verify this.

I also agree with people recommending atleast a GT430 - you get gain Blu-ray 3D support, and DX11, etc among other features.

Start saving up for extra storage because those blu-ray rips will fill up your hard drives fast!

Keep your PC, add hard drives to it for serving media, and get a $99 apple TV(forgot it doesn't do surround sound) small Ion or Atom system and put XBMC on it. Stream all your media from your sig rig and expand storage as needed.

An 8400GS will be better and cheaper than a GT430 and handle 1080p playback. suggesting a GT430 is just obscene especially when cheapest was mentioned in the OP.

Sure, the 8400GS isn't going to run away with game performance, but yeah.
