Yes, I do use ASIO.

Thats supposed to happen, bit matched excludes any volume modification, I'm not sure why the ASUS drivers allowed it but it seems that Daniel has prolly put it wright.

When I said volume rocker, I meant the volume changing thing in Windows. It didn't work with Foobar when I used ASIO.

Both ASIO and WASAPI shouldn't allow software volume control, whether that be via an application such as Foobar2000 or Windows. The whole point is that they bypass the Windows mixer and handle the raw audio to a receiver/amp.

WASAPI is supported under Vista and Windows 7 and allows exclusive mode where a WASAPI enabled application can gain exclusive rights to the sound hardware.

I did not notice anything sound different with my Beyers DT 880 and UE Triple.fi 10.

Are these not the same drivers that have been available on the Asus site since November last year?

Well my sound card came with ASIO pre-installed, and with the old sound drivers, I was able to control the volume of the music from Foobar. As soon as I installed the new drivers, I wasn't able to control the volume anymore (it was always on 100%). With WASAPI, I was able to control the volume.

What was up with that?

If you can control the volume in Windows, then both ASIO and WASAPI aren't working. It means the audio is still being touched by software mixers which is exactly what ASIO and WASAPI aim to bypass.

The two aims are to reduce latency (for music creation) and to provide exclusive mode so music isn't interrupted by other noises. Quality is sometimes said to be increased, but in 99.999999% of times, it won't.

Even if you have ASIO installed, the application still has to have an output wrapper to use it. So, FooBar2000 with WASAPI will not allow me to control volume. When I exit and watch youtube, I certainly can (because it uses a standard driver (I think?).

These are 1793 not 1792. Plus they have WHQL certificates. 1792 did not have WHQL certificates.
