Do you really believe drivers never change sound quality? Every set of drivers has default settings that the programmer has to account for. If the default levels for volume, bass, treble, etc. are set wrong then your sound will be terrible from day one and you would think it was your equipment or user error.
For example, do you remember the company Ensoniq? The company made the sound cards that were the precursor to Creative's SoundBlaster Live! cards. Anyway, in the driver pack's ini files, bass and treble were set to =0 instead of =1.
Well something as simple as changing that and reinstalling them gave users bass and treble controls in Windows' volume panel. If you think a driver will not change sound of the hardware, you may wish to rethink this position.
