WoW and FPS jumps and macros

Thread Starter
Hi guys, I'm new and haven't done the whole sig thing yet, but was wondering if anyone could help me out. I have 4gb ddr3 mushkin ram, 2.9ghz amd athlon ii x4 635, and an xfx 5750.
Now, on high / ultra, i get 60 to 75 fps everywhere, but when I go to Stormwind for example, it drops greatly...I know this is normal, but I got down to 25fps last night when it was completely populated. I realize that I don't have the best processor or the best gpu, but does anyone have a macro for dumbing down the settings in situations like this? Then another macro to go back to where I was? I plan on upping my GPU in the future, maybe to a 5870, but I've heard that ultimately, not many computers can get 60fps on ultra in Stormwind when it's very crowded.
So, in a nutshell, anyone have macros for dumbing things down, then reverting back to where my setting previously were? Also, can anyone with a 5870 tell me how well they run the game in populated areas? Sorry for the long post, and thanks for reading!

Dont upgrade your GPU. Upgrade your CPU.
Or buy a decent heatsink and overclock your CPU

But I have no Idea about your macro problem.

If I remember correctly the character limit on macros is like 255 or 225 something like that. So to do what you are saying is to change many video settings through console commands which I believe would be possible but you would need to make a multi-chain macro in order for it to just be 1 button, which I don't know anything about.

The problem is though that you would only be able to change some of the settings, because many of the advanced video settings require you to restart the game for them to take effect... so changing the values of them in your config file will do nothing in realtime.

I found wow to be very poorly optimised, on my sig rig it could get some high frame rates but multiple issues caused less than 1FPS when the camera was turned ANYWHERE, i.e. goes from 120 to powerpoint when i turn around. But yes CPU is the major factor in performance for WoW, Don't forget this is an incredibly old engine as well, 25 FPS is not too bad.

There is definitely a way to change settings with a single button press. There's a macro I used to have that would set everything to their max value of 255, which is beyond what the game options lets you. The only problem I see is that you would have to find out what values you need to get the fps you want. I think if you ask this on the wow ui/macro forum someone will be able to help.

Your best bet to get by a little better in Stormwind is probably to decrease view distance.

if you ask about macroes here you will most likely get a quick answer

My rig overclocked pretty high can't even run wow on ultra in orgrimmar and maintain 60 fps, so I think it's absolutely normal.

It's most likely cpu related, I've seen way better numbers on intels cpus in wow:/

i hope to up my gpu someday though, as games like bad company 2 will be much prettier to look at...though it won't help the fact that i suck at it online. anyway, thanks for the tips guys! what is everyone's thought on cataclysm btw?
