Not really. I use a 25" LCD and a 42" plasma as a secondary monitor for youtube/movies/some games. It's amazingly crisp at 1080p. Much more than I expected it to be.
1600p is a treat if you can afford it.. but it's a waste for 99% of users. Only games and obviously a bigger desktop (but it's all relative since everything on screen is smaller). And of course it's designed use which is multimedia design. You'd have giant letterboxes for movies or other 'regular HD' files. I wouldn't trade my plasma for a 30" IPS any day. Plus it was half the price.
