Fate of 1366

Thread Starter
With the recently released 1155 socket and the Sandy Bridge chips, does that mean that 1366 is obsolete? Or, is there another die shrink coming for 1366 users?

I haven't been able to find any information past the $1000 6-core gulftown processors.

People throw the words "dead socket" and "obsolete" around all the time, when it is never the case.

The die shrink will not come, unless you count the gulftown 990x. 1366 was a short-lived socket, we're being ousted for socket 2011 in... well, 2011. Probably late 2011, maybe Q1 2012. But hell, I probably won't upgrade until Haswell unless my CPU kicks the bucket. Liking the sound of FMA instructions

People are still happily gaming on 1366, not to mention 775, AM2, and even 939 *cough* .
I can still max out many games, most of them barely care about processor speed.

just because a new socket came out doesnt make the previous ones obsolete

just from the fact some people want 2x x16 on the lanes and 1155 can't do that shows that 1366 will not be going anywhere

1366 remains the enthusiast socket. You get better motherboards, more PCI-E lanes, and 6 core / 12 threaded 32nm CPUs. Also it's possible to run more RAM since it's triple channel obviously. The 990x should be coming out in a little bit.

However, if building a new rig Sandy Bridge is the way to go. If you're already on 1366 there is no point in upgrading as it's a big sidegrade.

The only reason there is this debate is because AMD fell of the face of the earth a number of years ago and Intel needs competition to thrive. SOOOOO, why not create it within itself. LOL

I guess my question is whether or no they were going to release a new processor line. I heard "i9" thrown around the past year, but nothing ever came of it. It's just a bit disappointing that intel is switching sockets only a year after I bought this thing :-/

Not to mention LGA 2011 is supposedly switching to quad-channel memory... because triple channel worked out so well in the past

What happened to socket longevity (like 939)
