BS discussion. If 1366 is "obsolete" then certainly 775 is "obsolete". Yet I'm an enthusiast and haven't had any app that urges me to move off of 775.

It used to be that games pushed you to the next gen of hardware, you HAD to have the new hardware to run the new games at full tilt. These days, the hardware is moving faster than the software, and I really don't feel any push other than GPU. Newest-gen midrange GPUs are plenty powerful for 1080p gaming.

Would I like to have a 5.0GHz 2600K? Of course I would. Would it change my computing experience one single bit? No. Does it make my 2-generation old socket obsolete? Of course not.

Obsolete implies "no longer wanted" or "no longer in use". You can't say that about 775, much less 1366.

LOL at his question on socket longevity. If Intel didn't change sockets then they'd have no way to nickel and dime you for CPU upgrades. AMD mostly avoids that (glares at AM2+).

If you've got money to throw around 1366 is not going to be obsolete for a while because of the few advantages it does have. That said, if you're someone with a tighter than 1K or more budget for a computer then 1366 is obsolete because you'll never have enough components to experience it's true potential compared to 1155.

And my side hurts to think that the only knew CPU for 1366 will be another 1K USD one. Oh Intel sure is the king of comedy next to Apple.

Wow, this is honestly the first time I've posted on here where people have gotten personally offended by a simple question.

If gulftown is the last cpu for the socket, that's all I need to know. We can argue the semantics of the word "obsolete" all day, but I think most people understand what I mean. In case you don't, here's an explanation...

I don't mean obsolete in the sense that it's unusable, unwanted, etc. I mean obsolete, as in, Intel won't be supporting the board with more processors. If you want to use an old socket, that's your choice. Nobody is making you switch. I just want to know how long it's officially being supported by Intel.

just from the fact some people want 2x x16 on the lanes and 1155 can't do that shows that 1366 will not be going anywhere
The 1155 has 2x 8 lanes...but they are at 5gbs as opposed to 1366 at 2.5gbs and 2x 16 lanes, so the bandwidth is acutually the same on 1155 and 1366...no need to worry about only having half the lanes.
