check out the folding forum here on OCN, they will tell you everything you need to know. There are also some stickys there that will give you the basics of folding, what it is, and how to get started.

OP-I would just use the 580 without the dedicated Physx card. you dont need one with that much power
Uh, no. The 8800gt is definitely not equal to the GTS 250. The 250 has more SPs and it has higher clocks. Look here and you can see that the 250 is about 12 ranks higher than the 8800gt. You are thinking about the 8800GTS, that is the one that is about the same as the 250 and even that is a little slower than the 250 because of the change from 65nm to 55nm.

Don't call me out like I have no idea what I am talking about unless you yourself know what you are talking about. While you may be right that is isn't to slow to run phsyx, it is definitly not the prefered option. It would be fine for a slower card, but it would be a major bottleneck for a GTX 580.

I say, just try and see for yourself. It's not very hard is it? I mean, It's sitting on your desk or something.. Just stick it in and try watching it doing the PhysX. if it DOES get higher Frame-rates, then just let it work

Whoa! Sandy, dont get your panties in a bunch. The 8800GT and the 250 GTS do share the same G92 core. Although the 250 does have a different architecture, hence more SP's for the 250. I did not say which one was faster or that the 8800GT would beat the 250. The differences between the two are miniscule is what I was getting at. I also did not recommend him to use the 8800GT as a Physx card, he doesnt need a dedicated Physx card with that much rendering and Physx power.

I heard I can put this in as a dedicated Physx card?

If so, would this be recommended if I go with a GTX 580? Are there any noticeable performance or benefits by doing this?

I figured it would be hard to sell this off anyway and even IF I do, it won't go for much,.
Conventional logic (ie. rationalization) would say every bit of card you could toss at the problem would be helpful, unfortunately the benchmarks have said otherwise, just not enough cuda core behind that card to really make an impact, so little in some cases card 1 has to sit and wait on card 2's calculations... a 450 GTS (probably the best $ - power considering what your moving onto) would add some ummphh to your setup, that 8800GT will just be a ball n' chain.

I completely disagree w/nearly everyone above. Adding a 8800GT for physX will raise your framerates and give you a better (or at worst, the same) gameplay experience on HW-enabled PhysX games, even with a GTX580 as your main card.

This is esp true on Mafia 2, which is graphically very demanding when maxed (i.e. the 580 will get a high load doing the rendering alone) + the cloth physX run on the CPU unless you have a *dedicated* physX card ... and any CPU is much slower than an 8800 at physX calcs.

8800GT is not too slow for physX, and your 580 will not be 'waiting' on it. I say use it

I ordered a 570 GTX and will have a 260 GTX to spare. Im going to try that out for Physx card. I read som test somewhere and even on a 580 GTX it could do 8 FPS with a seperate Physx. But i guess ill have to see for myself =P

Hold the phone here...

I may not be the smartest man on earth, but 8800gt = 9800gt makes about as much sense as 1 = 2...

Not to mention your making that statement with experience using an ATI card with no physX, backed up by a 9800gt as dedicated physX, which is great! A viable and proven solution, considering physX is Nvidia/CUDA and proprietary. You went from 0 to something.

Thats not the OP's question... the question is will his GTX 580 benefit from having physX disabled (on it) and dedicated to a 8800GT, and the answer here is... bench it, my subjective answer is, no; based on what I have read and researched.
