in short... if you have it lying around...

just give it ago... it won't hurt

What would yield better performance in a physx enabled game like Batman Arkham Asylum? (2) XFX GTX 260 Black Edition in SLI or a XFX GTX 285 Black Edition (1GB) with a single XFX GTX 260 Black Edition for Physx?

What about in WoW? I don't think they use Physx, so it's a single 285 vs 260sli. Thoughts?

running a GTX285 with an 8800GT as physX will yield better performance in physX(GPU not CPU) enabled games.......running an 8800GT as a dedicated physX card with a GTX580 as primary would most likely yield worse performance......for a GTX580 i suggest nothing slower than a GTS450 and even then it needs to be @900+ core

It's already been shown that a 9800gt with a gtx 480 provided a boost in Mafia II.

But yes, a 8800gt will bottleneck the gtx 580, but it will still provide more fps than the 580 alone. Get a higher end card for physx, even my gtx 470 is bottlenecked by my 9800GT - but I still get more fps with the dedicated card.

Okay, there is a LOT of wrong information in this thread....

8800GS = 9600GSO (96SP model)
8800GT = 9800GT
8800GTS 512 = 9800GTX = 9800GTX+ = GTS250

All of the above cards are an EXACT rebrand. Don't give me the higher clocks BS, or the die shrink excuse. Some GTS250's are 65nm still, just like the older 8800GTS 512.

To answer the question at hand:
Using the 8800GT as PhysX will help. It's not the "optimal" card to use, but it WILL give you an increase in framerate. Since you'll have it laying around, you might as well use it. It certainly won't hurt anything using it. Plus, you could always fold on it, as already stated .

Based on all your opinions I've decided to give it a try since it won't do any harm.

Next step is, I would like to know any recommended benchmarking software that would be best for me to test if frame rates increase or not with the dedi card.

Take a look at the Mafia II Public Demo graph below. A GTX480 receives significant help from a Dedicated Physx card as low as GT240. Only a bottom card like 8600GT would slow down the framerate. Now, granted that a GTX580 is stronger than a GTX480, nevertheless they are of the same level or category of performance. So, an 8800GT as a Dedicated Physx card will help out a GTX580.

GTX260 SLI vs GTX285+GTX260 (Physx):Take a look at the graph below
Taking GTX260 SLI as more or less like a GTX295 (Green rectangle in graph) and taking GTX260 is between a GTS250 and a GTX275 (Red rectangle in graph), I would say a GTX285+GTX260 is a better performing couple, for this Batman AA game.
Link: http://www.hardwareheaven.com/articl...d=138&pageid=4

If a game has no Physx and supports SLI (most games do), then GTX260 SLI will beat a GTX285 for sure.
As for Wow, I read mixed reports whether the game supports SLI or not.

Just took the 285 out.

Vantage
570 - 25k
570+285 - 24k
570+285 - 27k (ppu enabled)

I'd rather skip the noise and power requirements and leave the 285 in an i3 4ghz. It seems like a good match for my 1080p bedroom TV. HTPC mostly with the occasional gaming session. Mostly MAME sometimes WoW.
