New eyefinity build..help

Thread Starter
I made a post about 1.5 years ago about a new build. I ran into some rough times and had to shelve any plans on buying anything. Wife had what we first thought were some serious health issues and we had some legal issues so about 20k later I am finally back on top of everything and just got a big fat bonus. Time to buy. or is it?

I do lite video editing, photoshop and gaming. I only use linux but will most likely go back to a dual boot with win7. I would like to set up a nice 3 mon display with eyefinity. I would like to say that budget is not concern but of course it always is. I will have to keep it below 1k -monitors but expect to go up to 1400 or so. I would like to stick with AMD but...I guess sandy would be wiser for the money. I understand currently that eyefinity is not supported with linux so I will have to use win7.

Basics are Phenom X4, 4gb ram, 64 GB SSD with a 1Tb hard drive no raid.

Here is the starting point

AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor HDZ965FBGMBOX
Item #: N82E16819103727

Subtotal:$2,124.87 from the egg.

Thats about 1400 without the monitors.

So is the 6970 worth it? or should I step down a bit or maybe get 2 cheaper cards

This is all probably more than I need, but I would like for it to last several years.

If there is a better multiple monitor solution using nvidia and linux I would like to hear about it.

Should I just wait another 6 months to a year for dozer?

Lastly I would like to get down below 1k excluding monitors because I have a binding agreement with the old lady to provide her with the exact same amount of cash that I spend on this new build. lol. Luckily my bonus was 5k.

Go 6970, you can just crossfire them in the future for some performance increase if you want it to last a couple of years, or maybe wait for 6990? Not the most knowledgable person here, just want to help ^_^

1400$ without the monitors ...why not Sandy Bridge ? any amd build highter then 1000$ is not worth it already since u get SB for same price which gives u 2-3 times more perfomance , imho

Despite the AMD fanboi I am I'm going to have to say Sandy Bridge also, unless you wish to upgrade to AM3+ in the future (in which case there is a direct path from AM3, but it is motherboard first then CPU)

Ok so I guess it would be wiser to go with 2500K, even though it goes against my nature.

Changes

SAPPHIRE 100312SR Radeon HD 6950 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card with Eyefinity

ASRock P67 Extreme6 LGA 1155 Intel P67 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

XFX Black Edition XPS-850W-BES 850W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS SILVER Certified Modular Active PFC ...

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)

ASUS DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS Black SATA 24X DVD Burner

Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost)

Also I dropped the Noctua and opted for a Thermalright Cogage True Spirit Cooler

Staying the same

Western Digital Caviar Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

X3 NEC Display Solution E231W-BK 23" Full HD Height, Tilt,Swivel & Pivot Adjustable LED BackLight LCD Monitor

COOLER MASTER Storm Sniper SGC-6000-KXN1-GP Black Steel, ABS Plastic, Mesh bezel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Crucial RealSSD C300 CTFDDAC064MAG-1G1 2.5" 64GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

That brings the total to $2,042 and about 40 for the cooler from another source.

Looks like it would be better for the price. Basically saved the hundred on the video card.

Any problems with the fit in that case with these items?

I would have made a thread in the Intel section if I had known that was where I would wind up.

I plan on thinking about this for about week so I dont later accuse myself of binge shopping. With that I am off to the store to pick up a couple 6 packs of some good beer (hey its my day off!)

well now what do I do with P67 getting recalled? Go ahead and buy one now while a few are left or wait for 2 months or longer.
