Hello everybody, I'm new to overclock.net and i have a few questions. (I think i know what I'm talking about, but there's a good chance i don't, so bear with me) Ok, so I'm looking to upgrade my video card. I just got a Dell inspiron 580 for Christmas that came with an ati radeon HD 5450. I've been researching every single gtx 460 (i went a little overboard) and im a little stuck at what to choose. Im using a 1400x1050 monitor right now, but i will hopefully upgrade to an HD wide screen within a few months. But for right now, i was looking at either the MSI GTX 460 TWIN FROZR which is $125 after mail in rebate and the GALAXY GTX 460 which is only $104.99(!!!!!) after mail in rebate. these are 768 mb btw. Ive debated getting the 1gb version but for a decent one that isnt crap it will cost minimum 50 dollars more and up to 80 more for the cyclone which looks like the best. I've checked benchmarks and if you OC one of these it seems like they can get pretty close to a stock 1gb model. I'm not so worried, because ANY card will be an improvement over the one i got now.
Also, which of the 2 would be better for overclocking, and any info on either will help out.SORRY FOR HUGE WALL OF TEXT and thanks in advance

Assuming you're comparing these two:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-058-_-Product
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-519-_-Product

Don't forget the Galaxy has an $8 shipping fee tacked on. The price difference total drops to ~$12, and the Twin Frozr is a superior cooler imo. Go MSI.

twinklezz I say go with MSI but not the 768 card go for the 1 gb. card
it has more than just added memory, it also has a wider memory bridge
192 bit vs. 256 bit

Here is a good MSI thread started by an MSI rep.

Bench marks are nice but what you should really look at is game play and avg. frame rates

GALAXY is louder and hotter than MSI so few more bucks for the MSI is not wasted money. Getting 1GB over the 768MB for a relatively moderate gamer with 1920 X 1080 is a waste of money. The OC potential depends on the GPU's binning process and that is out of the buyers reach. But it can easily happen that your 460 768MB OCes more than the GPU of 1GB version and in such case the 768MB will turn out to be faster when OCed comparing to the OCed 1GB.

I had both, 768MB and 1GB. The difference is only in our minds and in benchmarks. The real life scenarios are completely different thing. The mem bandwidth and the 256 RAM means nothing compared to the frequency of the GPU which is far more influential with the case of the GTX 460.

I rate the Frozr, but try to get the 1 GB version. Better performance especially at 1920x1080p.

Thanks sooo much everyone but i still have a few more things to say. I understand what some of you are saying by going with the 1gb version but the msi 768mb one is a lot cheaper compared to a nicely built 1gb and i also have to pay for a new psu so i dont really want to pay too much money. Also, will i have any problems with my motherboard since its just a generic dell one? I was online chatting with a dell rep. and i forgot if he said either its not recommended or not possible to get a card such as the gtx 460. And true, the twin frozr doesnt have that shipping cost haha

The only thing with the motherboard and the case is whether it accepts dual slot card. Only than you would be in trouble. Otherwise there is no problem. Regarding the PSU, I do not see how 1GB would make such a difference over the 768MB if I understand correctly your question. The difference in power consumption is so close. Just get the 768MB and you will be so happy with it.
