Xonar ST ~ M-Audio AV40, or something else?

Thread Starter
Hey guys, i placed an order @ Amazon for Asus Xonar ST and M-Audio AV40, both add around $370 which is like my total budget($375 lol), i wanted a soundcard for speakers and my SRH-840, i may buy a sub later (most likely); my question is: is there a better path to achieve my goal which is decent sound-power for headphones and speakers for my pc? All uses, music(rock - pop), movies and gaming.

PS: i was completely sure about this setup but after 3 days since i placed my order and no charge from amazon i was wondering if i could improve something while i can cancel the order .

Well, this is absurdly biased since I'm trying to sell my X-Fi Elite Pro and breakout box, but if you have the desk/storage space (I do not), it really is an incredible combo. The breakout box just does not have a place in my office though, so I'm looking to get rid of it. While originally intended for musician's due to all the inputs it offers, it really can't be beat for the ability to customize one's audio experience.

Keep your order....I consider myself a "critical listener", I won't bore you with the details...just that I've been around the block a few times with audio equipment (mostly with stuff made in Binghamton, NY wink, wink)..

I am completely blown away with my ST when at my computer...it drives all my headphones admirably...you will love it with your Shures.

I think the M-audio's are a great bang for the buck but depending on your tastes, a sub will probably be in your future. Bic subs are still a great value, as are the kits from Partsexpress. But that is another day and another dollar.

You are well on your way to a wonderful near-field audio experience.

Enjoy!

^ I am still convinced that the Audio Technica ATH-M50s are the current king of modestly priced headphones (when found for near 110US, not the newly inflated price of 160US on Amazon).

My only complaint with them is comfort. After about an hour, the clamping pressure is definitely annoying. The upside is that my Grados now feel downright luxurious on my head.
