HDMI wall plate and home install?

Thread Starter
I am looking at a Town house and the location for my sig rig (which is also working as my HTPC at the moment) will be further away thyen right now in my apartment. I have been looking at HDMI wall plates so I can run the wires in the wall/floor.

I came across a HDMI wall plate that uses 2 CAT 5e/6 wires to connect the two plates together. Will there be any difference in quality between using a HDMI wall plate and 50 of HDMI cables vs 50feet of two lines of CAT? I want to run ethernet to a few different locations to a 8-10 port gigabyte switch/router so I will be buying a large spool of the CAT wire and will have enought on hand.

Any thoughts on this vs using an hdmi cable?

Thanks

Make sure when running wires, that they are approved wires that can be run through the walls. For code reasons of course.

I have been looking at this cable... http://www.cablewholesale.com/specs/...10x8-071th.htm

That is approved to be used in walls, right? And looking at this back plate... http://www.google.com/m/products/det...d=0CBwQ8wIwAQ#

This probably won't affect you, but I was talking with a professional installer at a local Home Theater place the other day (I was interested in HDMI wall plates too) and he was telling me that similar to different levels of HDMI cables (ie bandwidth capabilities) wall plates are the same. So if you need a high speed HDMI cable then you would have to find a high speed HDMI wall plate. Otherwise you will limit your bandwidth to that wall plate connection. He also said to steer clear of the wall plates because he has seen lots of problems with them. Ethernet is a high speed data line, so you're fine there.

^^ He is pulling your leg about a "high speed HDMI wall plate"
It's simply a gender changer neatly moulted into a plastic keystone.

I know that... but I need to make sure its HDMI 1.3 because we all know about how crappy HDMI 1.2 is...

So there is no quality difference in running two strands of CAT6 vs a similar length of HDMI cable?

Thanks thats the answer I was looking for. Now to verify that the company I was looking at for the back plate is both reliable and good quality.

Is stranded or solid conductor better for CAT6? my thinking is solid

So long as it's quality, shielded, genuine cat 6 cable? No difference at all.
Get stuff with shielding to protect the signals from interference and you should be golden. Not entirely sure which ground it should be linked to, signal ground or the wall box ground... Anyone have any thoughts on that?
