what wattage psu would I need?

Thread Starter
I have already tried all the PSU calculators. I am purchasing a new system for gaming among other things.

Intel i3 540 3.06gHz
nvidia GTX 460
4gb RAM
MSI H55M-E23 MoBo

What wattage would I need for this? What are the 6pin PCI-e connectors that this graphics card requires?

The gtx460 requires 2 6pin connectors, and a good ~500w psu would suffice

Can you give a link from a website you're going to order?

I have no doubt you could get by with a 450w; however, that would not be optimal for future upgrades or efficiency. You can SLI 460s on a 650w so that might be a good choice. However, if you can find a good deal on a 750 then that would be optimal (only if you plan to throw another gpu in).

****If you never plan to upgrade, go with a 500ish W psu.

400-450W would be optimal for efficiency, unless he's a 24/7 folder.

I might suggest that you wait for the new Core i3 2100 to become available. It's coming out February 20th, that + an H67 motherboard shouldn't cost you much more, and should be a very nice improvement over a Core i3 540. Just a suggestion though.
On your PSU, like other people have said a good 400-450W unit would be perfect. The Antec Neo Eco 520C actually has enough PCIe connectors for a GTX 460 so you won't need to use Molex-to-PCIe adapters and it's an excellent deal.

would a 600 watt corsair builder work? apparently the builders cables are really long. I would like long cables, i am going for a BitFenix colossus and Aria specifically told me that these cables were long enough to link to the top of the board, even looping them behind the mobo.

Yes the CX600 would work. Understand it's more like a ~500W unit since it only delivers 480W at 12V, but it'll easily power your system.

Thank you all so much for your help. The PSU was the last component I needed to look at. Now there's a £550 hole in my wallet.
