Which Sandy Bridge for my build?

Thread Starter
I was going to make an i7 build a month ago, then decided to wait when I head a new series of Intel CPU's was to come soon, so I held off on my old build and waited for the new CPU. So now, I already ordered my Motherboard for the new CPU, a GIGABYTE GA-P67A-UD4[Link], but after doing more research I'm not completely sure if getting i7-2600/k is worth it.

So here's the deal, I will probably be OC'ing it up to 4.5ghz, no higher, since I want to be safe and not attempt to break it. I'll be running an H50 CPU cooler, XMS3(8GB)[2x4GB], and want to get a GTX 570 as my Video Card.

So should I go with the i7? Or pick one of the i5's? And if the i5/i7, which version?

Serious Video/Audio/Folding/CADD /Epeen- i7
Everything else - i5

If you just game, the 2500k will do everything you need it to do, but you can "future proof" with the i7. Both will not bottleneck your 570 and I run my 2500k on H50 as well at 4.7 1.36VCore.

my vote goes go for the 2500k, if your not on a budget then get the 2600k but the 2500k is a better bang for buck imo

^^ What they said. If this is more of a gaming/general use PC, 2500K is the better, wallet friendly option.

Check Amazon if they have any on stock. Also Microcenter if they any in stock or in the area near you provided you live in the US.

They deactivated the Sandy gear due to flaws in all the P60 motherboard SATA controllers. FYI-you're going to want to RMA that new board of yours before long.

Seriously? Maybe you should first know what your talking about before posting. 5% of board may have issues over 3 years. Nothing big to worry about, don't listen to him. Will be hard to find a 1155 CPU right now though. Check the sale section see what's available.

Do you have an official source for that 5% figure? Because I have not seen any official Intel statement as such yet.

That may be the official line-but I at this point think Intel is downplaying a serious problem. Why on earth would every major e-tailor, near simultaneously, yank Sandybridge motherboards *and* CPUs off their websites, for a problem that officially only effects motherboards and is fairly unlikely to effect people? And besides, "over 3 years" is outright questionable, as SB boards have only been tested for a few months.

I've done my research, I know the reason, and I'm keeping my board. I plan to upgrade in the future anyway and I have a Year warranty for it, if anything, once the problem is fixed, I'll be allowed to return the old one and get a new one, at which point I'll sell it as new and buy a better board. Besides, it's only 4/6 Sata controllers that don't work, and I don't use a Disc-Drive, I use Steam, and every game I want to play is or can be downloaded, simple as that.

2 Sata's for a couple TB is fine for me. Besides, loving the new Gigabyte theme x3
