Overclocking my Q8400 on my GA-EP45T-USB3P

Thread Starter
I've had my Q8400 running a rock-solid 3.2GHz (Bus-400MHz, Multiplier-x8.0, no overvolting) for about 5 months now, and at first I was fine with this, despite the fact that reviews said this thing was stable ~3.5GHz. However, recently I've been a little discontent with this and I've wanted to push it to it's max especially since I'm not particularly concerned about lifespan on such old hardware. I've tried overvolting it with seemingly endless configurations that worked for other people and I unfailingly get continuous short beeps (power error according to the manual) whenever I push it just 1MHz over 400.
I have also tried the +0.5x clock skew and no matter what my bus speed is it always turns on for about 2 seconds then shuts back off and does this over and over again until I cut the power and reset the CMOS.

As I implied before, I've looked around and I can't seem to find a voltage configuration that works for me so I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong... I understand that Gigabyte boards are hard to overclock and Q8400 is a budget processor, but I just feel like it should be able to go a bit higher.
Also, I forgot to mention, I'm running this with a Cooler Master V6 with dual fans and my temps usually hover around 37C and have never broken 50C, even after several days of Prime95.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have had some luck with this CPU. Had it running at 3.6-3.8Ghz @ 1.39 - 1.41v under air.

Im sure i could lower the Vcore some by playing with the GTL but never bothered to.

Here you have the settings i used to 3.7Ghz

I have a Q9400 (Almost same CPU you have, only with a few more features) running 3.6GHz@1.26 Volts under load in a Gigabyte GA-P35 DS3R. Perfectly stable. And this is a old P35 motherboard.

I'm pretty sure your motherboard could handle at least 450FSB. So you should make it to 3.6GHz at least.

It's actually my system, my buddy just posted that for me shortly before he convinced me to make this account... So thanks a lot to both of you. I just had one other question, my MB at the moment is set at it's stock voltage (1.28) but according to CPU-Z it hovers between 1.328 and 1.344, is there something up with the motherboard or is it CPU-Z? And, when I start changing the voltages, will it work the way I want it to?

Is the MB voltage set to auto stock? That may be the cause of the voltage increase?

I had great help from this thread regarding the GTL settings.
So, I tweaked my voltages a whole bunch yesterday... And at the moment they're pretty close to the max, I don't remember the exact voltage configuration but I will post it when I get home. The question I have relates to windows stability, basically windows is fine till I get past 420MHz and my computer will post up to ~430... I was wondering if there's anything I could do to improve this, I would like to get to at least 450MHz and have it stable.
I'd also like to thank everyone who's replied thus far, the configurations and information has been extremely helpful... While I've overclocked for a while, overvolting is something very new to me so any extra help is greatly appreciated.

When upping your fsb you need to up your MCH core. Try not to go over 1.3v on it. Some people go to ~1.34 or so.

This is a situation where a little can go a long way. If i remember correctly i has my xeon running at a 500 FSB with a 1.3v MCH core.

Your chip has to be able to handle it as well.

g0004.jpg

You can give a small bump to MCH reference as well try to stay under 0.9v
