the 5970 is actully slower than the 580 in most benchmarks that Ive seen. It just happens to be faster at 3Dmark11 but its a dual GPU card and IMO dual GPU cards are not worth the trouble.

They are deff not worth buying when they just hit the market. Its a card that should wait to be bought for at least 4-6 months for the drivers to mature. You are way better off sli'ing or cf'ing 2 or more cards imho. Plus it makes your comp look cooler ^.~

What sucks is that the freaking 295 runs everything fine ... but the lack of DX11 sucks...
I am in the same predicament. gtx295 still rocks most games, at least they're pretty playable and with decent setting. Still has 480 shaders, much like the lovely gtx570, granted they don't run at anywhere near the speed and aren't DX11 capable.

I'm thinking of getting a 570, and later getting another for SLI, or just geting a 580. But again $500 sucks for a GPU pricetag. I'd love to get the new dual GPU solution from either ATI or Nvidia, but then again i'll be spending >600 for either most likely.

If you can still game good on your 295, maybe wait for Nvidia Kepler later this year.

wouldn't a better comparison be quadfire 5970 vs. SLI 580's? (2x gtx580)

I mean the prices are comparible and I'm thinking the 580's would take the cake. At least in resolutions above 1080p, or stuff that's memory intensive.

If you mean dual card then yes! Nvidia has the best single card at the moment the GTX 580

Lastly, drivers -- You'll have issues with both. You'll hear a lot of trash talked about ATI but don't believe it

That's true I hear complaints on both on forums.

Its not that I hate AMD ATI or anything they have great prices for their cards and amazing performance. If you feel like a change then switch to ATI and see how it is.

To be honest I feel like switching just for a change but ill wait for more newer cards to come.

not worth it. 300 bux is just about the amount where you begin to experience diminishing returns.

Now this makes sense. Gone are the days of "on mass" spending $400+ for a video card. Take note of current trends out there. For example, AMD has never been king of the hill as the best performing single gpu card out there in some time now. Lets look at it:
-2000 series
-3000 series
-4000 series
-5000 series
-6000 series
none have beaten nvidia as fastest single GPU, never! But why are people still buying AMD? Simple, price vs performance is much more inline to people's expectations. Sure, they don't have "bragging" rights but when push comes to shove AMD use their dual gpu solutions to take the crown. Something that their competitor has had trouble competing against.

So why is it they are gaining market share and taking marketshare away from nvidia? Because the perception of "paying for fastest video card" is greatly diminished. Regardless if price is a factor or not.

As for the drivers. The work just fine and no worst then their competitor's drivers. Both have had thier ups and downs. But I do like the fact they've added features like:
-MLAA
-EQAA
-Surface Optimization
-Tessellation Slider
-etc

No matter how you slice it, more features are good thing . Specially when they are working as they should.
