low gpu and cpu load in games?

Thread Starter
hey, whenever i play crysis for a while and then alttab i only see that 1 thread is working and my cpu load is around 30%, even when i play it in windowed mode and then look at the cpu load. gpu z shows that both my cards are working at around 50-60%. when i play css my cpu load is at around 10% and still i got a constant 120fps lol but crysis runs a bit dissapointing imo.

specs:

i7 950 @ 4ghz
2x 580gtx
12gb ram
asus p6t deluxe v2
1000w psu
120gb ssd
1tb hdd

any solutions?
lol

um....... i have 2x 480s OCed to 850mhz core (will perform about the same as 580s)

i find the same thing....

turn on the SLI utilisation bar... and have a look

for one... it can only use 2 treads......

and do you have HT on?

i just tested with the sli bar and whenever i look at the sky or wall in crysis the bar goes full but when im in a big battle with a deep background and fps drops it becomes smaller. yes i have HT on

I tested several games today and this is what i got:

50-60% gpu usage and 120-200 fps in fear 2
70-95% gpu usage and 100-160 fps in bfbc2
20% lol gpu usage 80-100 fps fallout nv
30-50% usage 80-120 fps in dead rising 2
95% usage 200fps in cod mw2

I play everything maxed 1680x1050. my cpu never seems to be too stressed either in these games. is the resolution too low to stress the gpus enough maybe? ow and i never actually see my cards hit 100% ;o

Those numbers seem about right, considering you are using SLI 580's to run at 1680x1050 ... which is a bit silly IMHO, but whatever.

Yes, you're not getting higher GPU usage because in the strictest technical sense, you're getting CPU-bottlenecked. However, with FPS numbers this high, it really doesn't *matter*, does it?

Like Hodgy said above, if you're seeing 25% CPU usage when you have 8 threads enabled, it probably means that you're fully using 2 cores, which is how many Crysis can use.

People around here try to rely WAY too much on CPU usage in Task Manager to detect cpu BN's ... the proper way is to OC your CPU and compare the % change in FPS vs % change in clock speed. As this ratio approaches the value of 1, the more CPU BN'd you are.

You want to see your cards hit 99%, try running Heaven bench completely maxed out w/Extreme tessellation, or 3dMark11.

BTW, try installing MSI Afterburner and then enabling the Onscreen Display functionality so you can see what everything is doing w/o having to alt-tab in/out. You should also OC that 950 of yours if you aren't already.

Lastly, SLI in windowed mode ... it's unreliable. Lots of times it works okay, but I wouldn't 'base' anything off of what you see happening in windowed mode. If you're gonna be 'drawing conclusions' about any observations you're making about numbers and such ... look at full-screen performance only.

thanks! Yes i installed afterburner today and used ingame monitoring so the results above are not from alttabbing. Im planning to buy a 1080p screen soon, will that get rid of the bottlenecking or atleast lower it? i oc´d my 950 to 4ghz

i just did the heaven bench maxed as you said and it ran very smoothly but the load on both cards didnt go higher than 97%

well play crysis with some heavy combat always drop fps , i think thats normal , but fps not constantly drop when u play in normal condition , crysis pretty graphic demand game , my 580 can get 120 fps with bfbc 2 , and 90fps with cod black ops but crysis i only get average 50 sometimes even drop to 25 when having intensive combat
