[MSNBC]So how do you shut off a whole nation's Internet?

"ISPs have direct control of the Internet, so what happens in any country depends on the control that the state has over those ISPs," Clark told Life's Little Mysteries in an e-mail. "Some countries regulate the ISPs much more heavily. China has in the past 'turned off' the Internet in various regions."
When a government orders the ISP to disable service, Clark explained, "they have lots of ways of doing it technically. They could power down devices (which is sort of like unplugging things), or change the routing tables (which is more like a "digital kill," and can serve to allow selective services to stay up)."

And if you actually believe "it couldn't happen here" -wherever "here" happens to be for you - perhaps you'd be interested in some real-estate?

A little off topic, but I would absolutely love a law in the US to restrict families to one child, or be heavily taxed.

For people who read the first page, specifically my post, then reply without reading any other explanation or other parts of this conversation:
This is a reply to another post, that explains my above statement:

It doesn't work like that [government takes your child], you wouldn't have your children taken away from you. The idea would to just tax families with excess children, to help the economy and to motivate people to stop acting like rabbits.
Of course there would be exceptions to such, like twins and the alike. Though, families who obviously can't afford to take care of their children shouldn't have children. Not to mention, the US is becoming over populated, socialist benefits are eating away out our market, jobs are flooded... We need some sort of population control.
On topic:
The US wouldn't cut off any form of communications, it would be unconstitutional and devastating to the market.

Sorry to say, but that is the stupidest law ever, i have a Sister, and there is only one only child in my close family, and he's pretty preppy and thinks he's all that. Nearly every only child i have met has thought that they were biggest and the best. Not that im saying that all are like that, but still. Besides have you every heard of a little call Twins or Tripplets? What would those families do, huh?

"Oh, im glad that you've had you children, but since there are more than one we need to take one away and put them up for adoption. So pick you least favorite babies and hurry up about it."

Seems like a great idea. Really it does

I don't think the US could kill the internet inside the US for any reason. Business couldn't operate without the internet and it couldn't survive without customers on the internet. Even if there was an uprising in the US, to try cutting off the internet would mean a collapse of the US economy in short order.

The one-child policy was enacted as a possible solution to a few of China's problem, the most obvious being population size. While it may seem strict to people here in the US, just think about the overpopulation in both China and India. Not only does this mean extremely cramped living areas, but also this presents a problem to the economy as well as to the environment. A denser population generally will produce more waste than a sparser one.

While I do not agree with censorship of the internet in China, I am not fully against the one-child policy. Things are different between here and China; what makes sense to them may not make sense to you.

The part he quoted in the article even says they can shut down portions of the internet and keep the rest operational.

And if an uprising in the United States ever got so bad that they considered something like this then I don't think they would be thinking about the economy... it would probably already be in shambles. (and don't say we are there now... no matter what they say on the news it isn't so bad that an uprising would occur...)
