Do Nvidia and Ati cards do things better than each other or was that a myth?

At one time I thought people said either Nvidia or Ati did 3rd person shooter games best and the other card did the 1rst person shooters the best. Did I read right? This was a long time ago, are both brands about the same in quality now in your opinion? I mean are they both evenly matched in graphics other than Nvidia having physx which is a buy for some ppl like me. tongue.gif

There is no way one can be better at a first person compared to a third person. It's all about rendering the 3D image so if there were two identical performance AMD and Nvidia cards, they would not do worse or better than the other in either type of game.

You also have a nvidia card, is their a reason for that? I have one too, did you get a good deal on a 460gtx or was it something else like physx that you decided to go with Nvidia?

well i mean i think that is just a myth the wat gpus are decided if the can handle a game is if they get high fps in different resolutions, so therefore you need to look at stats or benchmarks for that card. As of now nvidia has the best consumer card out in the world the gtx 580 (no arguments there sorry) but if you are going for multi monitor setup go with ati if you are looking for multi gpu set up go with nvidia, it all matters on what you want out of a gpu

It was a good deal, and this was the card that fit in my budget and had good cooling.

NVidia works better in Linux, has Physx and it folds
if folding that matters to you(doesn't to me)
The first 2 things are good enough reasons for me to get NVidia over ATI/AMD

you heard wrong

and to bring on to more details
nvidia's cards generally cost more than ati (now amd) to be able to match it in performance measured in framerate, but for that bit more price you do get physx

and performance in a specific game varies when tested with eack card seperately simply because of the coding of the game
ati gets better framerate if game is coded to send small packets of information for it to deal with
nvidia can handle larger packets of information and thus the physx option because ati is made to deal with smaller packets, and physx can be turned on or off and when it is on, your card gets bigger packets and it can't do it
like 2 fat guys (one being physx, other being the rest) going through a small door simultaneously - nvidia has a bigger door...

i do price verses performance.. ten fps or so in games doesnt justify the extra price you pay in my case it was between the 5870 and GTX480 and although the GTX480 was faster imo not $100 faster at the time its different now
