I hadn't gotten that far yet. I did the basic "Express Uninstall" from the control panel, and was rebooting before moving on to Driver Sweeper as I'd been instructed to run this in Safe Mode. It's not a program I have used in the past but I was ready to try it.

In that case, i don't know what could have gotten wrong, uninstall gone wrong?

I always run my uninstalls in normal mode, haven't gotten any problems, nor have i used driver sweeper, and never will.

I wasn't too concerned about driver sweeper. Friends have used it in the past without problems. I'm thinking this might be more related to something residual, orphaned, &c.

Didn't think about it before, but when I get back home I'll make a note here of what line Safe Mode hangs at before it terminates itself, in case that's evidence for anyone savvy.

Good question - no, I had not done any overclocking, including any modifications of CCC settings.

The more I read, the more I see that I am not the only one to experience this (and a general lack of real solutions). The only difference between myself and others is the ongoing loop of insta-death preventing me from troubleshooting my own solution.

Possibly. Here's an update... it still dies trying to boot (after the Windows 7 loading logo, before it would normally auto-login)...

Safe mode kills itself after trying to load storport.sys, and blue screens, showing me 0x0000007a.
I put in the XP Professional CD to do an install on the secondary drive (a WD SATA 2TB), so that I could save the files on the primaries; it also bluescreened as it was loading, throwing 0x0000007B.

Clearly I haven't been able to get any minidumps...

EDIT - My big question now is, do we think that if I were to be able to delete particular files (leftover files from the ati drivers, the atikmpag.sys, etc) this problem might go away?
