Xonar ST/STX, X-Fi Titanium HD or other? - Page 2

Cheers LostCase. I've not really considered an external DAC - the musicologists at work tend to use them - but my Audigy 4 has begun to drop Audio so I'm fairly keen on replacing it.

Do you drive headphones from your Titanium HD? I'm considering a pair of DT770 Pros (80 Ohms) and am unsure as to whether I'd be able to drive them from a non-amplified card.

If im not mistake the new titanium hd has replaceable op amps for headphone amplification, so if the card isnt set from the get-go, you can upgrade the op amps to drive your cans

The Asus Xonar Xense, Creative Sound Blaster Titanium HD, and HT Omega eClaro have upgradable op amps on them. What drives them down to is features and price. The Xense is too expensive, but the headset seems to be better than the beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro headphones (I have one).

Creative has a sale going on which slashes 30% off with a coupon code, reducing the price of the Titanium HD to $125.99 (US residents only) and you get free shipping if you order by February 4th.

I wish I was a US resident, $125.99 is madness!

I'm looking at the equivalent of $240 for the Titanium HD, $225 for the Xonar STX and $255 for the Xense.

I've come to the conclusion that I'm not overly upset about losing the 5.1 analogue out - when my Z5500s die, I'll replace them with a nice 2.1 setup or an amp that takes optical.

Now to choose between the Titanium HD and the STX...

Those are expensive prices for sound cards except for the Xonar Xense (which I could find for $274.99 in the US). Most people seem to be happy with the Titanium HD so far and have no problems with it so far.

I have both the STX and the xense, both sound very close if not the same in quality regarding headphone output,

other than the 7.1 breakout, on the xense,

the stx has the magic voicefx changer and karaoke, where as the newer xense doesn't have it included in the audio software

i do have the pc350 that came with the xense, sounds alot better than the regular pc350 , they must've fine tuned it or something but i can tell you the one that came with the xense soounds ALOT better

Honestly, if you were going with that set of cans, I wouldn't trust the onboard amp on the Asus. While it will power it better than the Titanium HD, it's not going to put it anywhere near it's full potential without a proper amp. I would say go with whatever is cheaper. Like you, I never had the previous driver problems with Creative. The drivers still work without a flaw for me. Though, in reviews, I've been reading that Creative has gotten their drivers together overall and are much better than on the previous generation of X-Fi cards.

But going from the X-Fi XtremeMusic, to the X-Fi Titanium HD was night and day with headphone listening with my Grado SR325i's. As far as speakers, though, the soundstage is the only thing I notice as I'm on Logitech Z-4's while in my college dorm. I have yet to be able to test them with my proper speakers at home.

The STX has been ordered and is on it's way - still unsure about choosing it over the Titanium HD.

Guess we'll see how I get on!

let us know how it goes mother. hehe, that sounded kinda odd. But yes, I'm actually considering the external route considering the guys at head-fi.org highly recommend them.

That tends to cost more if you're going the external route, but you'll get much better components to upgrade. Wish I could do that with a receiver, speakers, headphones, and DAC. That would make a killer surround sound system, but if I just listen to headphones then a portable DAC and amp would be enough.
