Trying to improve game performance

Thread Starter
I have an i5 750 OC to 4.0ghz coupled with a single GTX 580 (stock)
8gigs DDR3 2000mhz (stable on Prime for 10 hours and Intelburn 5 runs on Max and Linx 20 runs max)
My questions pertain to a game that I fell in love with years ago. City of Heroes/ Villains.. It's an OPENGL game. I honestly was hoping for better performance with this pc and this game.
How is it possible to suffer low or "heavy feeling" frame rates with this setup and this game? I run most settings on max. with 1900x1080 resolution. I do get slightly better playing with vsync off in windowed mode.
Also, I play other new games to my complete satisfaction accept this pile of crap.
Any suggestions would be appreciated, even ideas.

Maybe this game needs more VRAM. It's kind of hard to play with Ultra Settings, I can barely do custom high with this setup. Before the last time I played CoH I was running an X1950XTX. I don't know if it'll even run better with more VRAM or possibly dual 580's. I just know that in MMO environments the more further range and FOV you have the more VRAM you will probably need. In GTAIV you can't change FOV distance without having more VRAM. 1 GB VRAM is kind of restrictive in GTAIV. So maybe more VRAM? Or possibly dual 580's. I never tried to run this game with Crossfire so I never got a chance to see the results.

I don't know but I think I will have to test the game again with PlayClaw running, it will tell me what the game is eating more of, CPU or GPU and then I can figure out what it needs more of. Try PlayClaw. But then again don't forget this game was made by Cryptic Studios. =/

It might be CPU heavy and require a better CPU to run well at that resolution. I would try a lower resolution.

I belive all of the current cards are HORRIBLE with opengl. Unless they fixed it in the newest drivers, I remember reading that was the case. Like a 460 doing worse then a 7600 bad.

Nope, it's not CPU heavy, it's GPU heavy. I just tested with PlayClaw, it eats up 99% of my GPU. My CPU was barely touched hit about 60% at the highest. You definitely need more GPU power, try another 580 hahaha. That's gonna be a lot of money, but maybe more VRAM will help with the textures and distance. Ultra settings is unplayable for me, probably need more VRAM to load the new ultra textures for Going Rogue.

I do appreciate all of your thoughts. I too see that the GPU is 99% with ultra settings on. It's just a poorly coded, ancient dinosaur or our drivers aren't efficient in this game.
I certainly am not dumping another 560 USD for this game. NO way. I can mange most Ultra settings, just not as happy as I'd like to be lol
ALso, this game has practically no benefit in SLI or Crossfire

DC Universe plays like a dream and trounces the GFX in City
