Best Gaming Headset Setup [No Budget]

Hello.

Repetitive topic I know, but I think without a budget the community can let loose on what is the best gaming headset setup.

I currently have a Asus Xonar ST, I would be willing to sell this if their is better for the headset.

Budget is not a problem, although be reasonable no 2000 dollar headsets.

Thank you in advanced.

Modori.

Beyerdynamic DT880 32ohm> XFi IMO.

Personally, I don't really care for the Xonar line for gaming usage, but hey, it works.

I can't really recommend a mic frown.gif

Just thought I'd add, that I'm currently in Australia, so options are kind of limited, I can order from anywhere that we will allow it though.

I currently have a Planetronic 777 running through the ASUS Xonar ST with 3.5mm to 6.5mm adapters with medium gain, it's sounds clear, but the bass/treble is lacking.

It is prefered if the microphone is on the headset, as a lot of voice chatting is going to happen.

Thanks Skylit.

What would you recommend over the Xonar line from ASUS? I like the way that headset looks, pretty brutal, comfortable.

How would I go about purchasing this? And anything I need with it? amp? soundcard?

Ball, I have heard nothing but people complain about the megaloden being average and annoying when it comes to positioning in game, and the microphone being muddy and clarity not it's storng point. But your advice is considered, I will check the pricing these days.

Emmure, I do like steel series, their keyboards are remarkable, but havn't heard much love for the headsets so, I don't know.

The Beyer 880s are a good choice. I would recommend headphones with an inline mic over headsets, because they tend to sound better for the price, for, games, movies, music, w/e. With the 880s, you'd need to pick up a mic. A new amp/soundcard won't be necessary, unless you buy a special one terminated with an XLR plug or something. You can find 'em over at Amazon.

You might look into other headphones like the AudioTechnica AD700 or Sennheiser HD 595, especially with no budget. Good luck!

Thanks, ethereal.

Whats the general consensus, on the ASUS Xonar Sense with the Senn 350PC.

I like the idea of the microphone and cans in the same unit, just I've seen some poor reviews about them together.

I just got a set of Sennheiser PC 360s - These are an updated, and Open Air** version of the older PC350. I like them a LOT. Compared back to back with my well used Senn HD650s (also open air) through my HT Omega Claro+, the mids are slightly (supressed/distant), but unless you go from one to the other I doubt most would ever notice. The 360s are brand new, though, and I haven't had time to/bothered to do an extended break in. So they may open up with use. Bass response is *tight* and well controlled. Highs are crisp and clear, as you would expect/demand from a premium headset. Directionality is nice, and the cups are angled - so there's less of that headphone "Music In The Middle Of Your Brain" effect. Rather you perceive the sound to come from in front of you. Not to the extent you would get from actual speakers, but noticably (to me, anyhow).

The headband is pretty snug, but they're comfortable. More to the point: I can listen for long periods of time and not get fatigued.

Microphone volume is OK - The standard setting in Windows was quiet to my Guildies on Ventrilo, so in the sound setting I put the Boost on (properties...). That came out a bit distorted, and I/we eventually settled at "Boost On But Set To 60% volume" (Speex codec on the Vent client). I definitely like that the Microphone mutes and unmutes simply by swinging it up(mute) or down(on).

The volume control on the side of the headset is also a nice touch.

3rd party review: http://www.hardwareheaven.com/reviews/968/pg1/sennheiser-pc-360-g4me-headset-review-introduction.html

** As the name implies - Open Air 'phones do not have closed backs, so sound can/does escape out, and they also allow sound in. I prefer them, since I can hear the telephone ring or if someone risks incurring my wrath and deigns to actually Speak to me... wink.gif You know.. While I'm on Ventrilo < laugh >
