Hooking up two PWM fans into one header... with no adapter.

Thread Starter
I have two identical PWM fans on my d-14.
I want to use a lighter to melt the insulation along the 4 wires of one fan and twist+solder the other fan wire into it that I will later insulate with electrical tape. So i'll have one fan feeding normally and the other fan feeding off the side of the 1st fan's wire. My question is, should only ONE fan retain the yellow (rpm) wire such as seen in 3 pin fan y-adapters?

Cut the wires and splice them. Splice all but the rpm sense, if you have both rpm sense hooked up to one header you will get weird readings (-8350RPM?)

Yes. Also, I would get the power from the PSU and only use the mb header for the PWM signal - 2 fans drawing power from 1 header is sometimes bad for the mb.

Also a very good idea, Biostar doesn't even specify the max allowable fan wattage for the fan headers, I don't want to try and find out =P +1

Looks like mr has this covered. Buy a nice wire stripper/crimping tool so you don't have to melt wire insulation in the future though

Why on earth would you do this?

Speaking as one who has wire cutters, wire strippers, crimp tools and crimpsets - I even did some wire work tonight - I would not do what you are proposing.

Instead, buy this. For $3 shipped it is a bargain. I bought two, thinking that when the first died I would replace it. Well, between fan testing with the Megahalems (see item 1 in my sig) and my D14 (unpublished) I plugged and unplugged fans on that Y-cable hundreds of times. And it never broke. It's now living a comparative life of ease in my main rig, supplying power to two fans.

The only mod you need to do with this y-cable is to cut one of the yellow rpm-reporting wires. Earlier today I had two fans on an unmodded Y-cable and the mb reported the summed rpm's of both fans.

Save your modding for worthy projects. For example, that first Y-cable I bought: I soldered the yellow wire from one branch to a solo yellow wire running to a plug (cut from a Scythe adapter) the allows the rpm of the second fan to be reported to whatever fan header on the mb I plug it in to. Actually, I have done this with a number of Y-cables so they typically report the rpm's of four fans to my mb.

If you're going to do much of this, buy some heatshrink tubing at Radio Shack or Home Depot. Buy a heat gun. Cover those soldered joints with heatshrink tubing, not with tape. Tape falls off. Heatshrink tubing stays.

Question:

I'm getting a PWM Y-Cable to connect my two identical 120mm fans to my motherboard CPU_FAN header. If I'm reading correctly the discussion above, the motherboard will report the sum of RPM of the two fans instead? Given that the two fans are identical, does that mean the header will supply equal power to both fans, and if I get a reading of 2000 RPM, does that mean each of them is running at 1000 RPM?

No, it will not give you the sum. It will give you a random #. Only connect one of the RPM wires. The RPMs are going almost identical if they're the same fans.

Well, when I did it, I got the sum of both fans. YMMV.

Not just Biostar, most motherboards dont have the wattage specs for the fan headers. its stupid
