Not to stir this up again, but I've recently noticed that the Dell U2711 is considerably cheaper (at least here in Canada).

Dell U2711 is $750
Apple LED 27" is $930 refurb
Apple LED 27" is $1099 new

All of them are free shipping.

Given that price point, the Dell seems to be a lot more attractive. Would anyone still buy the Apple over the Dell given these prices?

The main difference is that the Apple 27" Cinema Display is a sRGB monitor. Dell U2711 is wide gamut, with an sRGB emulation mode.

If you don't need the extended gamut, the Apple is a good choice, but considering current pricing, the Dell is clearly the better buy. I guess apple expects people to pay a premium for the LED backlighting?

your welcome.

Wrong in almost every imaginable way. Both are high quality IPS monitors. Just because it has an Apple logo on it doesn't automatically make it bad.

Thanks for the quick reply. I don't think sRGB emulated vs native really matters to me. I mostly use my Macbook for writing code, reading emails, browsing the web, and the odd WoW session.

The only advantage I see to the Apple display is the integrated speakers and camera, and of course it mates rather well to my Macbook Pro. I'm not sure that justifies the price difference though.

Any final thoughts on this?

I will take Apple LED, especially the design look.

Out of curiosity, why an IPS monitor then? I definitely love them, but outside of media editing I don't really see a point in those monitors versus TN panels for normal use.

Well, I don't really care for IPS either. What I really desire is screen real estate (ie. number of pixels). No other monitors can touch the 27" monitors from Dell and Apple in that respect.

Correct me if I'm wrong...
