Will this build work?

Thread Starter
I've recently decided to get a new computer because my 2005 one is starting to show its age, and I'm tired of upgrading it. I've been told by my friend that I should build one, so I spent quite a bit of time looking up the needed parts. I'm still not sure everything will work together.

Gaming will be the main thing I use it for (already bought Win7 64-bit), though I'm also planning to dual-boot Ubuntu, which I have installed on an external hard drive.

I've looked up compatibilites for all of the parts and everything seems as though it should work, but I don't want to have to keep returning things until I find something that fits, so I need someone to look over my list and:

1) Tell me if there are any problems (and maybe offer an alternative piece of hardware). Hopefully it's not as silly as "it won't fit in the case!," though I don't really know.

2) Suggest things which are essentially the same but cheaper.

I plan to order the parts next Saturday (on the 4th or 5th), and I'm aiming for right around $1100 max. Here's what I've had in mind, and links to their respective store page:

Case $50
Power Supply $95 (but with rebate, apparently)
Processor $225
Video Card $170
RAM $50
HDD $55
Disk Drive $17
MoBo $150
Monitor $200

Some additional questions:
  • I plan to recycle 2 sticks of 1GB DDR2 RAM (so I can have 6GB as opposed to 4 that I plan to buy) from my current computer, will that work with the MoBo, which says that it supports DDR3?
  • Do I need a sound card? I'm only going to be using headphones, and maybe 2 speakers. If so, what's the cheapest I can get that'll work with this MoBo?
  • Anything else I might need? Any tips?

Thanks in advance guys.

Those parts should work.

No you CAN NOT use DDR2 in a DDR3 motherboard.
You dont need a sound card, there is built in sound on the motherboard. although sound cards have higher quality sound.

This as your video card, 15$ more yet almost 2wice the performance.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817207002

That as your PSU, 3$ more but infinitley better.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231427

That as your RAM, 5$ more but alot cooler running (and looking) also more OC headroom

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827118039

That as your ODD, 4$ less yet same performance

Other than that HDD is perfect, the exact one i would go with, i cant pick your case for you and as afar as the mobo goes i cant pick that for you either because i dont know what your looking for, but other than these things i think i made some smart picks for you.

EDIT- As a side note that mobo wont OC the graphics card, its a P67 and you need an H67 for that.

Case?Cheap and a Rosewill but will work.PSU I would go for a Corsair or Antec.Ram no on the Adata go for the Gskills here.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231427
Then the question of why Sandy Bridge? You can get 1366 cpu's and motherboards from the for sale section cheaper.

Edit:ninja on the Gskills.

-Darn, oh well. Guess I'll just add two more sticks, so much for recycling. I'm selling my current comp so I guess it'll get me a bit more money for it.

-Alright, good, thanks. I don't mind about the sound quality, it sounds fine to me using headphones on my current computer, which also uses inbuilt.

Awesome, thanks. I'll update the OP with these. The 50w less on the PSU won't really matter, I assume.

not only will it not matter, it will actually perform better due to higher quality parts and 12v rail.

Hm, any ideas? What about this. Again, all I'll be using it for is playing games, using USB devices, and the CD drive, so any fancy stuff I can cut out. Plus it's quite a bit cheaper than the one I planned to buy.

edit: Google says it's the opposite, did you get them mixed up?

P67 is without the onboard graphics (requires a video card) and it allows you to overclock the cpu. H67 has onboard graphics (that can oc) but you cannot overclock the cpu. Since you are buying a video card and a K series cpu you should go with the P67
