Possible solution for "suddenly" unstable Overclocks! *MUST READ*

If your computer needs more voltage to run at the same speeds, is BSODing, locking up, or failing at Linx/IBT where it hadn't before, try this fix courtesy of Papasmurf, it helped fix my supposed "degraded" CPU!

Now open up an elevated Command Prompt (run as administrator) and type in sfc /scannow, hit enter, and allow it to see if it can fix anything in Windows. Once that is done open up0 another elevated Command Prompt and type in chkdsk /r, hit enter, and then reply with a Y when prompted that it can't run now, do you want to run it the next time you reboot (or something to that effect), then restart the system to allow it to run. Depending on how many errors it finds and the size of your OS partition this could take anywhere from 20 minutes to a couple of hours to complete.

You can use BlueScreen View to see what the BSOD's were about unless you've deleted the dump files.

Also to note on this but not necessarily on topic or related to overclocks, the sfc /scannow command is extremely useful if you have a system that has been attacked, infected, etc. I have used it over and over again to repair unbootable OS's.

Could this also fix my monitor not starting from cold boot? Or is this limited to BSODS and freezes? Thanks!

Do you by any chance have an ATI graphics card ? If so, then that's your cullprit right there. Have the same problem. Normally it takes one power switch off and on again to make it boot. But sometimes not even after 20 times. Then only a CMOS reset can solve this. And it IS the ATI card that won't get the BIOS to post.

In other words, NO, if you have an ATI similar to mine, then this will not solve this issue. Only buying another card, which I am personnally reluctant to. I'd rather throw the whole damn case out of the window before I give in. hehe I allready ripped the fan of of the card in anger. Now it has a custom fan on it, and still runs evenly cool. Go figure...

Do you by any chance mean DesQView from Quarterdeck? I haven't run that or QEMM in about 15-20 years, but I do remember them quite well.

My ATI card is causing the monitor issues? But recently my monitor was just fine after upping vcore. It just started again yesterday. And it says overclocking failure on the pre bios screen. Are you sure its ATI exclusive?

I hope this helps, I love my 5870s :O Would rather get a new CPU then get a new card.

You do NOT have a video issue. You have an Overclocking issue that is preventing the system from posting. It has nothing to do with your operating system so this will not have any impact on it. You need to redo your bios settings as one or more of them are incorrect. It could be somethinglike not having enough vcore, having too much vcore, incorrect ram timings, not enough vdimm, too high of a fsb setting, or any number of other settings. The display problem really isn't the problem, just a symptom. There is no monitor problem. If you have a speaker connected to the motherboard (not in the back but a case speaker connected directly to the mobo by the power on switch wires) it should beep once when it posts. If it doesn't beep at all then you know it didn't post. It's also quite possible that it will beep multiple times in one pattern or another that will tell you what type of failure you are having.
