friend's comp died so need a cheap cpu/mobo/ram

Thread Starter
so uh.. yeah,

Friend's brother's computer one day BSOD and it's never powered on again since. When pushing the power button again, the system powers up for about 1 or 2 seconds and then immediately turns off again. I unplugged everything except cpu, ram and vid card but same thing. I'm guessing either his cpu died or the mobo died. I reset the cmos and pulled out the battery and same problem. Swapped out PSU's and the same thing happens... so......

he is just planning on getting a new cpu/mobo/ram. Now, i honestly was thinking of getting an intel system i figure in the price range where i'm at, it's simply better to go with amd. He doesn't want to spend more the 300 dollars TOTAL (including tax) so i'm very limited. Here's the thing, the system will NOT BE OVERCLOCKED.

Truth be told, i'm not exactly sure what a good motherboard is in this price range. I'm leaning towards an Athlon X4 640 and 4gigs of ram (god ram is cheap now!!) but, not sure about the mobo at all. Any suggestions on which to get?

As a note that his current video card is a 4870 which he has no intention of upgrading. It will mainly be used to play SC2 at 1920x1080

^That looks pretty good for the money. You really are in luck as ram prices are dirt cheap right now. The cheapest DDR3 stuff that I saw was at Tiger Direct (PNY 4 G of DDR3 1600 CL8) at $32.99 after rebate. The rebate for that actually ends today. I was looking at it but after reading some of the Newegg reviews it seemed that some had to run it at 1333 speed. So I passed and went with Crucial Ballistix Tracer ram for $57 shipped. But the G.Skill ram posted above looks more than capable as well. So there are lots of options with cheap ram right now. Tiger Direct charges about $2 for shipping.

Yea, prices are ridiculously low... I haven't looked at prices for a long while, I was very very surprised. I just wish that SSD would go down now.

Phenom II x4 955 + Gigabyte GA-870A-UD3 - $228
2x2GB Kingston HyperX Blu DDR3-1600 CL9 - $50, $40 AR OR 2x 1x2GB Kingston HyperX 1600 CL9 for $44 (if you don't like rebates, thouh the HyperX Blu is a decent overclocker)

Total cost is slightly less than the previous suggestion, you save around $10.

Just curious why you think that 1600 speed CL9 ram is any better. For a few bucks more you can get 1600 CL8 ram.

Wow, that looks like a great deal that I didn't see; too bad no free shipping. 1600 CL9 completely pwns 1333 CL8. In fact most of the time (due to poor memory performance scaling below 1600Mhz on AMD) 1600 CL9 can beat out 1333 CL7.

I was going to post that the Crucial ram had gone down in price $8 since I bought it last week. That was this afternoon. Now tonight it has gone up in price $18 more than I paid. So a $26 swing in one day. Wow. Tiger Direct is so unpredictable. When I posted the link it was $46.99.

Looks like they are now $60 at the Egg...

Thanks for the tip, I guess I still have a little yet to learn...
