Memory Question

Hi,

I don't know much about memory, and I have a question.

I want to upgrade my ram, and I was looking at these :

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...odeId=1&name=9

I don't know what the difference between them is though. Is there any brand that works best?

Thanks!

You will get numerous people that will tell you all their opinion on best brand. Red_hat_ownage and xcd are the RAM gurus here. But I will say you could do better with RAM than those you listed. Its looks as though you may be trying to get the CHEAPEST best RAM. Which is an altogether different request.

Quick rundown. You want the lowest CAS latency you can get with the fastest timings you can get. So if you have 2 sets of RAM at 1333 and one has timings of 9-9-9-27 and one has 8-8-8-24, the one with the 8-8-8-24 timings would be faster. (although not to say the others couldn't overclock to those speeds as well) So, faster speed, faster timings (called "tighter timings) ata good voltage with some OK heat spreaders is the buy you want.

IMO the best RAM modules are Mushkin, some Corsair, and some Super Talents. The rest are still good though depending on what you need. However, if you are looking for something cheap, you can still get an OK set with atleast heat spreaders installed on them.

These are not bad. Same speed as other ones you listed, same price range, heat sinks, and a lower cas latency then the rest you linked.

EDIT: Just saw these, cheap enough and also a tad faster than the others at 1600:

Hi,

I appreciate the quick reply!

I'm interested in the first one you linked (better reviews; I'm paranoid).

I want to make it's compatible with my motherboard though. Is there other specifications other than 240-pin that I need to meet?

DDR3 and within speed parameters of the board. You could always check QVL of motherboard in manual, but I have never once checked one and never once had RAM that wasn't compatible with a mobo that I had as long as it was the right data rate and right pin count. You'll be fine with those.
