Why don't pc gamers get demos anymore? - Page 4

Meh, we get a few exclusive releases every year and I'm quite satisfied with 3 or 4 games a year that are "up to par".Although demos would be great it seems that companies no longer care to produce them.
I'll stick to playing Madden, JETS FTW!

Certain games may have originally been on PC, but that does not mean they should be nowadays.
Well if you think about it consoles have always been more popular. I cut my teeth on the Megadrive and only got my first PC after the PSX, even then the PSX was my main gaming machine. My PC, as a games device, was sidelined until I bought an 6800GT on release. Up until that point I had to largely ignore it. Since then I think PC gaming has gotten more popular.

But you're mistaken in thinking I think a game that was originally PC, should stay PC only. I think said it was offensive to receive a horrible console port on a title that made it's name on the PC. I understand fully everything you mentioned and it's not something you can argue with. Consoles are cheaper all round for the developer. But that doesn't remove the desire amongst PC gamers for a proper title with some dedication to the platform.

I'm glad games like Crysis and Battlefield 3 are promising to have effort put into them for the PC release. I think we can all agree that having a game played on top spec hardware getting the same FPS as a console game is horrendous.

It's games like Just Cause 2 that are shining examples of extra effort put into the PC version. Sure, the game is a console game primarily and the copy on the PC was simply lifted and ported. But it's done so well. Extra effects, better frame rates and GPU technology. And little things like Wireless 360 pad functionality and on screen controls that detect whether you're hitting keys or buttons and show the correct ones (E.G. "Hit Start to continue" or "Press Enter to continue")

I think most gamer rage against consoles is the fact that they're so popular, yet totally inferior to our machines in every single way and we only receive half arsed console ports and then the developer throws a fit when sales flop. Not many are graced with Valve-like omni-presence and act according to internet rage (E.G. Valuve back peddling on their lack of PS3 support to now fully supporting it. Kudos, imho)

Well, I take my informations from sources that I trust. Mostly Rock Paper Shotgun, OCN and independent YouTube videos. Sometimes I look at the Steam forums (if available for a game), but the average intelligence in that place ain't that great.

I do the same, with older games I remember (i'm only 22 though!). I was thinking "I remember having so much fun on that game, why don't they make them like that any more". So, I got a DOS emulator, went back and played it and actually, it was pretty rubbish.

What it made me realise was that games had got better, but my interest and sense of enjoyment had dwindled. I was remembering the "good old days". Just because you think games used to be amazing and "why can't they make them like that now", doesn't mean the quality has got worse. New gamers are entering the market and love things like CoD. Your enjoyment for gaming just isn't the same.
Dos games were not only doom clones (Blood was great!). Many younger players still play the classic adventure games (and they should) or new games that have that feeling. So they make them like then, you just have to search for them.

That time was of great innovation, not just in the graphics.

There are countless games for everyones taste, especially on the pc.there are millions of pc games of all sorts and just a few thousand of console games.

Console games are expensive to produce, plus they involve more risk than an indie or free pc game, hence it is harder to stray much so it is easier for the player to feel alienated if it deviates from lush 3d, huge worlds, cgi popcorn in-game movies, etc

It also tends to be those with the inability to understand the basic concepts of business and see the world for what it is, a money making scheme. Developers are there to make money and that is it.

Can't disagree there, but I can say it makes financial sense to at least make sure that, if you're going to support a platform, to support it fully.

You can experience a fraction of a movie by watching a trailer. You can experience a fraction of a book by reading a sample, or paging through it in a bookstore. You experience NONE of a video game by watching trailers and reading reviews. Trailers are deceptive, and don't let you play it yourself, and reviewers are mostly paid. I have bought plenty of games that seemed awesome in trailers and reviews, but were **** when I played them.

Case in point: BC2. Actually, since that one is so well-loved on this forum, it demonstrates my point perfectly; you won't know how much YOU personally like a game until you've played it. I regret the purchase, though I'm sure many others don't.

However, I can't argue with game companies when they stray away because of piracy. Demos take money to make, and they can't be sure all losses will be recouped.

The reason PC gamers no longer get Demos:

1.) Create console game, hype it out, create console demo to further hype it out.
2.) Make 1 million on that console games sales.
3.) Decide if it is worth spending 1 million on DRM tech just to port it to a PC, because as we all know PC Gamers are software pirates, and need to be controlled.
4.) Laugh at the idea of a PC gamer enjoying your game, and continue making console games.
