1 WD Black or 2 Samsung F3..?

Thread Starter
I am in need of a serious storage upgrade!

I have a 80GB WD that has been my main boot drive since 2002! (Yep, still running without a hitch) A few years later I added a 150GB WD for more space and then a couple years ago bought a 500gb external...

Everything is filled to the max, so I figured I would get another drive that would give me more space as well as maybe speed things up!(This would replace the 80gb as the main boot drive)

I have been looking at the WD Black 1TB drive but then saw Newegg has the Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB on sale this week. I can justify buying one of the Blacks or splurge on 2 of the F3's and put them in RAID.

What would be the best as a main boot drive?

I'm not sure about the WD but I had two F3's in RAID0 and one of them properly died after not too long =/

From what I've seen the F3 is one of the best, if not the best performing HDD. The Caviar Black have slightly lower access times, but lower sequential speed. Also the WD Black seem to make more noise and be slightly hotter.

My vote goes for the F3 as it is a generally faster drive.

P.S. An alternative could be the Seagate Momentus XT - it has 4GB SLC buffer onboard that for some usage patterns performs as good as an SSD (thus faster than any other HDD). The latest firmware solves all the issues associated with platters' spin up/down that have been reported in the earlier reviews on newegg.

The WD Blacks are still faster drives for an OS drive. The latency is the important factor with an OS drive. For storage, you want the read / write speeds.

OS = WD Black (or RAID0) (due to lower latency)
Storage = F3's (or RAID0) (due to higher speeds, but also higher latency)

Since the F3's are so cheap, they're DEFINITELY worth it for a RAID0 on an OS drive though. They're not THAT far behind the WD Black drives, but they're nearly half the price .

And the Seagate Momentus is still a joke. Sure, it has onboard SSD, but you STILL have the platter drive. The faster platter drives (WD Black and Samsung F3) will still be the faster drive over that Seagate. Seagate has YET to make a drive recently that's worth any money. Nothing since the 7200.10's.

Chiming in here since I currently have 2 1TB F3's, 2 1TB Blacks, and a Seagate 1.5TB, so I might be a little relevant

The Blacks as far as I can tell are great, but if they are great, then that makes the Samsungs fantastic. They are quieter and have higher transfer rates (important to me). Blacks have lower access times though I've noticed, but its literally by 1ms, I have screenshots to prove it ;p

The Blacks you cannot Raid unless you get drives older than November 2009. WD changed their TLER setting so they won't work. I could explain more, but it doesn't change the fact that they won't work unless they are older. F3's raid beautifully though.

Also yeah, Seagate is slow but reliable as I move my case with it all the time. Though I guess you can say they all are since I move them all ;p

Conclusion: If transfer speeds or Raid is important, go for the F3's. If not, get whatever is the better deal between the two. And don't go out of your way for the Seagates, they are average.

So, Samsung F3 > Caviar black ?

I own both! I think they are both really good drives! Wd has a better Warranty. I have had no noise issues with my Wd, though it does score louder on these benchmarks! No complaints about either ! Here are some specs to help with your choice. Check it out there both solid drives!!!

I also own both, never put them in RAID even though I have several of them. F3 is quieter and runs cooler for me.

I say go for the F3's for the price, and that its quieter, and colder

Actually, the TLER issue is only relevant if you're talking about a higher level RAID array. RAID 0 and RAID 1, they're perfectly fine.

The WD Blacks ARE the faster drive for an OS, because of their access time. Period. But its not worth it to get a single Black over 2 F3's. The 2 F3's will rape the single black.

Bang for your buck, 2x F3 1TB's in RAID0, and don't forget to short stroke and backup your data .

Best OS mechanical drive setup = 2x WD Black 1TB or bigger in RAID0.

Best Storage mechanical drive setup = F3's in whatever RAID config you want.
