i5 2500 Cooling Advice

Hey all,

Just double checking for my wallets sake, but would it be possible to pair an i5 2500, with a P67 motherboard, for a mild OC (3.9Ghz?), and have it run on a passive CPU cooler? I'm trying to make my new build as quiet as possible, yet still max out the limitations on the 2500 (no k)

Good advice will be rewarded as always

non k cpu's do not multiplier overclock, you would be lucky to break 3.4 ghz.

I forgot about that but it still only shows 3.8 with 4 cores right?

If I'm playing something intense though, it'll still only use 2 cores max though, yeah?

And that's the thing, if it won't OC all that high, could I get away with passive cooling, case fans, and some good paste? (already ordered some AS5)

I have an i5 2500k and I am using the stock intel heatsink. It's very quiet. Also it's been shown to be good until around 4.2-4.4 oc. I think you would most likely be happy with the noise levels, or lack thereof, from the intel hsf.

The Intel stock cooler is terrible. Do not even attempt to overclock while using it.

I boosted mine to 4.0 Ghz and only ran 3DMark 06 which took maybe 2-3 minutes and the temps were exceeding 80 degrees. Their coolers are pitiful.

I overclocked the K to 4.0 Using the stock intel heatsink set to full. It never went above 60 other than in synthetic benchmarks.

You CAN overclock a non-K model, but only by adjusting the base clock speed. And because the 'Northbridge' is on the CPU now, changing the baseclock affects much more than CPU frequency. That's why intel strongly advise against it.

I've seen non-K models as high as 3990MHz though, but i wouldn't reccomend it. You'd also need a huge passive CPU cooler and at least 2 case fans.

Same here. There are lots of people overclocking the 2500k with the stock heatsink with similar results of good temps.

You just have to let the crappy thermal pads melt so they provide contact. Either that or remove them entirely.

I've always wondered why the intel heatsink is round while the intel processor is square :S seems silly if you ask me.
