Oh socket 478 and DDR memory did same thing intel just did it quite a bit better.

DDR2 has my loves. wubsmiley.gif

Just for the record though the p55 chipset would only do PCI 1.0 transfers despite intel insisting that it was pci 2.0 compliant.

So their chipset record is making tick tock look like..... not screw up, screw up. redface.gif

Like 775, you still had to constantly buy new motherboard to fit the new pci-express card or new DDR2 ram or new core 2 CPU or new 45nm or new DDR3 RAM. Your final motherboard would support all your older cpu's but who wants that cool.gif

775 was pretty good because the original P965 chipset released with Conroe could support a Q6600. Which is what alot of people use still and that chipset is like from 06.

I think a socket change is warranted when the ram standard advances (DDR1-DDR2).

Also I think the real reason for AM2 was for power consumption purposes. The 2650e for example is a 1.6GHZ chip running on AM2 and is only 15W.

AMD shifted goals to low power consumption and that started with AM2.

There is not a huge difference between 1156-1155 compared to 939/AM2 IMHO.

My Phenom uses 140 watts. How is that a focus on low power consumption?

AMDs top end chips have been 125W+ since Athlon64 IIRC possibly earlier. Phenom I was the odd man out with its ridiculously high TDP.

Either way, I have PII at 3.78 using 140w, and an SB at 4.5 that won't top 100w. Just saying, performance per watt wise.

Yes but AM2 can do low powered solutions as well, it just depends on what the purpose is.
Also if the Phenom I was "ridiculously high" with 4 cores, what was the Pentium 4 with just 1?

PII is 45nm and SB is 32nm, Bulldozer would be a better comparison over PII. The Phenom II doesn't compete with Sandy Bridge, its obvious it in a league of it own right now.

but yeah we can just speculate what went wrong for now.
Actually, there is a fundamentally issue with 1156.

The DMI 1.0 connection only allows a 10Gb/s connection between the CPU and chipset.
