I just sent back a fried EVGA GTX 570sc card that was only 6 weeks old. I made a big stink about it too. Maybe they'll have pity on me and send me a 580.

Looks like EVGA is trying to cash in on the VRM scare:

EVGA Prepares GTX 570 HD Classified Graphics Card - Softpedia

Supposedly this is the pic of the product banner:

So they're going to put the reference cooler on a custom board with two extra VRMs on it. I'm confused by the HD branding though.

The HD branding is due to the card coming with a full sized HDMI port and a DisplayPort, along with the normal dual dvi's.

So even with just going up to the 1.1v max on Afterburner and having the temps stay under 80C, the card can still instantly burn out with no warning signs? On stock cooling, I went up to the 1.1v and I am stable at 950/1900/2270 in Afterburner, with the highest temp reading being 79C. Making sure the temps stay under 85C isn't good enough? The card can burn up with no crashing or warning signs?

I killed one, that was enough for me. I've got 3 of them, 2 in my gaming/main box and 1 in my living room htpc box. They're doing just fine at stock settings with the fan speeds increased a bit for good measure.

Would this mean if I send in my card with one golden contact partially sheared off (not bad but enough to cause me some concern) they might RMA mine and send me the one with the extra power phases?

I guess not since I'm in South Africa but it's worth a try

This looks like 6 phases instead of 4 on the reference 570 does it not? IIRC the two phases closest to the PCI-E connector were removed on the reference design?
I narrowed my video card choices down to the PNY GTX 570 (reference, $290 AR), the GTX EVGA 570HD SC ($295 AR) and the ASUS GTX 480 ($299 AR). Does this mean I should just go with the 570HD and get a couple more fans for my case?
