Have you killed a 570? (No recent deaths, buy some 570s!) - Page 41

I learned Furmark is a useless benchmark... I learned gaming is an okay benchmark... I found out Folding@home was the best benchmark I believed I was stable at 775mhz on my GTX 470 I played games 24/7 with out an issue. I started folding and I noticed I couldn't pass a work unit, asked people here what's causing my problem it was the overclock... GTX 470 turned out to be rock stable at 750mhz.

Decided to add a second card instead of overclocking. Picked up the 2nd one, waiting on RMA for first.

Been running my sig's overclock for over a month and still rock solid! It probably has around 5-10 hours of OCCT over the past month too.

A program can be, yes, but Furmark is written specifically to draw as much power and produce as much heat as possible, the actual stuff it does is probably completely useless in terms of an actual program.

What I'm saying is, yes, you could easily load up every single transistor the GPU has to the max and then further, but the amount of real-world programs that use that? Zilch.

And you know this because of your extensive knowledge writing CUDA PTX assembly?

Hint: It's not that hard to access every single register and perform vector math addition on all of them, which is what Furmark seems to be doing.

Vector math addition also happens to be one of the most commonly used GPU operation.

I never said it was hard to do so, however, point me to more than one real world application that does and puts out as much heat as Furmark, that's my point, it's over-the-top.

Depends on how you define real-world. If we accept my definition that the application has a point (besides making GPU use up insane amount of current), then I will offer the following example.

In my field of work, we process 3D images which contain 2 bil+ pixels and apply all sorts of filters to them. Each of these filters range from hundreds to thousands of integer operations per pixel.

I do not have access at home where all my power monitoring equipment is, but when we process these images we always trip the thermal-limiter on the quad-Quadro FX5800 array we have at work.

Furmark is not the only application that can load these things up to the extremum.

I was going to buy one but here and Newegg people are having issues.
It's not as strong as the GTX 470 before it, which could take a beating.

I'll get a GTX 580 instead.
