[TR] Catalyst 10.12, 11.1, 11.1a HD6970 Comparison - Page 3

I don't think anyone is claiming that a 6970 will perform better at higher resolutions. Rather, a 6970 takes less of a hit at higher resolutions when compared to many other cards. Hence why it's at the middle of the list for "low" resolutions but can duke it out with a 580 at high resolutions.

Because the kind of people who buy $300+ graphics cards are not the kind who play at low resolutions?

When reviewing a product, the review should cater to the kind of people who use the product.

At low res the card is crap but at high res it competes against the much more expensive 580. You figure it out dude, I can't explain it any better.
Oh, I get your point but call me out whatever you want if that makes you feel happy. I just get the feeling that you are in a discussion with yourself

I'm not talking about comparing it to a GTX 580 or others, just the accuracy of the test. I think it's very easy to understand that putting more strain on a GPU = less performance. We're talking about 6970 vs 6970. If it was 6970 vs GTX 580 I could understand all of the fuss.

Oh I'm not disputing this at all guys, I was only saying something about the accuracy of a test. This test wasn't about taking performance hits now was it

They are only comparing driver releases @ 1920x1200 all the way to 1280x1024. I never said anything about a GTX 580, not willing too either in this thread.

I run a 580 at 1920x1200 ... this review works fine for as they have the resolution to test against others. I am betting a lot of people run the same as me with these cards.

What are you on about? Whose calling you what?? You get my point but think I'm discussing it with myself, but you get the point?

Again, this crappy site is comparing driver differences at low resolutions. They couldn't have picked a worse card to use to compare at low resolutions is my point. I don't recall calling you any names either!

You have the fastest card at any resolution... and technically it's true that most play at your res. However the card in question, it's forte is not that resolution but at resolutions that use it's 2gb vram. Which means this review did not use the card to its fullest.

Not calling me names, calling me out of being slow or something. You're kind of making this discussion your own one. I never mentioned a GTX 580 yet you start a discussion about how an HD 6970 beats a GTX 580 at higher resolutions .

If you compare an HD 6970 against itself at 1680x1050 you still measure a performance gain. Whether you compare 9000 FPS vs 1337 FPS you still get more or less the same performance gain. If you bench a GPU @ unplayable settings however and it gets 12 FPS for example and on another run it gets 3 FPS, you measure a 400% performance gain, well that's accurate.

tl;dr:

If the 6970 fails at 1280x1024 it should fail on Cat 10.12 as well as on Cat 11.1 (both are not optimal!), hence it does not necessarily take away any credibility of the review. Does a card have to perform at its best to make a decent comparison?

I agree with this...I don't see how these resolutions don't allow for an accurate comparison between the three driver versions on the same card.
hmm. 11.1 seems to be the best drivers.
are 11.1a drivers betas or something? because the performance sucked with those.

Yep, basically what I am seeing, but the 11.1 seem to be the better of the 3 choices right now. The card really seems to just be a big failure performance wise from what it was suppose to be. Coming from someone who loves AMD, that really hurts to say haha
please explain to me why the 6970 is fail.
BECAUSE ITS NOT
look at CF scaling and compare it to 570.
IT RAPES IT and COSTS THE SAME!
i choose 6970 CF over 570 SLi anyday.

if only AMD cards could actually FOLD i'd go red again
