Why do I prefer using a single Nvida gpu?

well it easier to deal with
only one card to oc, with no compromise on the oc
less work to install and remove
room to go with two cards later
only one card to get rid of when your done with it
less heat
less power use

but with 3dfx cards it's sli or nothing

I would go sli if I A) Had the money and B) had the need. My gtx 580 plays everything I could ever want it to on max settings, so until I have the desire to, or fall into enough money to buy a new power supply, another radiator, another full cover block, new motherboard, etc, I will probably just stick with single card solutions.

SLi will add extra heat in your case and play around with the temperatures of your GPU's, typically the higher GPU of the two will be much hotter than the lower one...

I went dual SLI because it ended up costing me about $55~ a card.

The headache just isn't worth the tiny tiny benefit.
performance varies really, if you are playing a game at resolution of 1920x1080p and under single gtx 460(for instance) can max out every game except a few titles. but if you run SLI at that res it's not really worth it, you'll see gains if you go higher in res.

to answer OP

I have had 460 hawk in SLI, it was pretty cool and fun to run dual gpu and my e-peen grew big. gains were there, card ran fairly cool overclocked. but I did notice minor lag sometimes and FPS fluctuated quite often I sold both before 560 came out so lost little to no money and opted out for gtx 570. so far enjoying the single 570, less heat, runs all my games fine and performance is more consistent (fps)

I haven't had any problems with my 480's so I wouldn't hesitate to go SLI again.
