Hey guys, I have a question for you.

In end of June I'll be taking my gaming rig here to Spain since I will be attending to a LAn PArty with some friends in July (Euskal Encounter, biggest and best Lan Party of Spain, and top 5 of Europe ^^), and I'm wondering about few things...

Should I take the CPU Cooler and the GPU's off while I have the PC in the car? Or just the CPU Cooler?

It will be a 17-18 hour trip by car, and PC will be in a safe spot in the back of the car with some soft clothes to protect it, but I'm scared of the GPU's and CPU cooler bending the motherboard or even breaking it...

Should I just remove both the CPU cooler and the 2 GPU's?

I transported my old rig many times without issue. If you really want to be safe you can take them off, but since you're going to a LAN party, it might be difficult to get everything back in. If you can find some spots in your case, you can try anchoring the stuff with cable ties, maybe some cabling, and some ingenuity. Like if I were to try and tie my CPU cooler down, I'd use zip ties to attach wire to the ends of the heat pipes on my Mugen 2, then attach those wires to various locations, like the empty screw holes where the 120mm rear exhaust was and/or to the 5.25" bay. Same can be done with graphics cards, but you might have trouble finding places to anchor the wire on the card itself.

Overall, though, I don't think you need to. I usually lay my computer down so the mobo's laying flat while it's in a car. There's yet to be any damage with any of the computers I've built. ASUS boards are surprisingly rugged, too.

hmmm.. Thanks.

There's no way I can put my case laying down as it would take too much space from the car, it will be vertical durign the whole trip, so I think I'll take the CPU cooler and both of the GPU's off just to be safe.

Thanks

Oh, and I'm back home on Saturday night (17-18 hour trip... sucks! ), do you want to play some Portal 2 this weekend once I'm back home?

Well, better safe than sorry I suppose. Hit me up on Steam when you're back and we can do some pwn

Also, I just realized that using a Koolance CPU-370 on AMD takes away the awesome ninja star look so I may pick a new block...

Do you really need water for 4Ghz?

Why not look for something like a Thermalright Silver Arrow or a Noctua NH-D14?

I don't know, but I wouldn't go water for an extra 0.2Ghz at most.

I have a lan party pretty much every month and I've never taken anything off. Heck there are people who run those 4.5lb Copper True Coolers 24/7 in a vertical configuration.

Temps are getting dangerous, and it's just going to get hotter and hotter here. Not to mention my NB and mosfets are still burning up because the cooler blocks airflow from my 200mm (SA and D14 wouldn't help the situation here). I tried going for more traditional airflow today (front to back, bottom to top) and while my NB and mosfets were definitely running cooler, my CPU hit 65C within 30 minutes of starting prime and it shut down. As it stands, CPU temps really aren't my biggest concern, but going water should do wonders for fixing the problem. I'm sitting at 1.43v for 4.0GHz, and from other people I've gathered it's safe to go to 1.475 at least... but my cooling can't handle it. So, for all these reasons and more, I'm going water.

Well, keep in mind I will be driving for 18 hours non-stop, it's not a 30 minute drive.

Ouch, that sucks, those are high temps for such low voltage...

4Ghz at 1.43v I would call that almost a golden 1055T

Most need around 1.475v-1.52v which is the max safe under air.

I needed 1.45v for 4Ghz which was still great! Most 1055T's need around 1.5v which is the average, you should consider yourself lucky.
