Dark Predators - Page 91

My Mugen 2 got me to 4.0 @ ~50-55C, though I needed relatively expensive fans, and I got lucky with my chip. There's no way a 212+ will perform to that level, though you should realistically be able to achieve 3.6-3.8GHz, depending on your chip. Consider everything, at this point. An NH-D14 or SA would be a great cooler, or you could shell out ~$50 more for an XSPC RS240 kit, which would cool your CPU just fine.

I would SO love to be able to get that RS240, but I'm not sure I can shell out the $130 right now, especially since I haven't even been able to finish saving up for my GPU (6970 2GB).

The D14 looks like it would be a good one, along with the SA, and much more within my price range, but I feel like it'd be worth it more to just get the liquid cooling if It would work better.

So, opinions, which should come first? Better cooling, or GPU?

I'd figure that if I could get -bigadv my ppd would be better than just regular WUs and the 6970 combined, but I'm not sure.

Also, I'd imagine the liquid cooling would work better than air once I have the GPU...

EDIT: When the coolers say AM3 compatible, I'm wondering, is AM3+ the same shape as AM3?

Well as far as CPU cooling vs. GPU goes, I'd have to ask what your voltage is. I hit 4.0GHz on my 1055T at ~1.42v, and bottomed out at 1.4 in BIOS. Apparently, that's a fairly good chip. If you can hit those voltages while folding, and you're interested in folding*, I'd have to encourage a nice water loop. You could easily build a custom loop for the price of an HD 6970. Really, it all comes down to what you'd prefer.

*This assumes you would fold for Dark Predators, making all our efforts worth it for July.

He will indeed be joining; I'll add him in after this update.

I'm working on becoming a folder for Dark Predators ^_^

Unfortunately, my chip isn't as good, but I can probably still hit 4.0 at ~1.44 with a good cooler, and the LLC usually brings it up ~0.04 under load.

Right now I have it set to 3570@1.375, HWMonitor says it's @1.39-1.41, folding at 56-57C and ambient is about 70F

That's really not bad. It's a solid chip, and you should be able to fold @ 3.8 24/7, depending where you live. I'm assuming with 70F temps, you're fairly tropical or mediterranean. My current ambients are 75F, or ~24C, and my 1055T didn't go above 60C while I had it in. Either way, you'll be a welcome addition to Dark Predators (we're alive!).

But anyway, where are you from, new teammate?

SLC, UT.
Luckily I live in the basement, with only a small window, so not too much excess heat.

As for running @3.8, I could only get it stable at 1.4375 in BIOS, and LLC raised it up to 1.47 while under load. It also started to get up to about 63C under load, which I'm sure is no good for folding. (I actually had it about there for a couple days folding until I realized that I was looking at the 54C internal core temp...)

Try putting at a slightly lower LLC setting, if there is one. On my Crosshair IV, I had it at 75% LLC and it was perfect. Set it to 1.42, and it wouldn't go above 1.40 on load. I think your rig has some real potential here... If you can, wait a couple hours for kcuestag to wake up and we'll flood you with information
