[Eng] AMD has a 5W Fusion APU - Page 2

Why would I want an APU from AMD when I can get an Intel Atom with an integrated Nvidia GPU?

The 4xx Atom does have a on die GPU, but that uses 6.5w + NB wattage.

Intel does have the advantage of using year old 45nm tech and still being competitive.
But the disadvantage that their processor architecture is a hybrid of 80386 and Pentium M with power gating.

No, just no. How are you going to bring up Nvidia in a 5w thread?

Hmmm I thought this was for netbooks.

For tablets though the GPU capabilities would be awesome

AMD's APU is leaps ahead anything Atom can currently offer. Power wise, performance wise and cost wise.
It should be better. Atom manufacturing began nearly four years ago...

"Cost-wise"

I'm sure it cost AMD more to produce Bobcat cores than it cost Intel to produce Atom cores based on the fact that there are 2500 Atom cores per 300mm^2 wafer, whereas there are only 900 Bobcat cores(+ 80-core GPU) per 300mm^2 wafer.

That's on the 45nm lithography for Atom AND Intel is supposed to be moving to a 450mm^2 wafer to further reduce cost. Though I'm not sure this applies to TSMC.

Section from first article you linked: "Results: Atom Is Not Suitable As An Office PC".

Had to mention it. Bobcat may cost more to make, but it delivers much more functionality as well. Price/performance favors AMD.

This is a dual core CPU at 5W, which maens an optimized single AMD Bobcat single core should be able to manage around 2.5W at 1Ghz. The AMD southbridge chipset is also much, much more power efficient than the Intel offering for the Atom.
