Laptop issues

So I've been having some issues with my laptop lately. For some reason, the LCD has an enormous pink tint on the left side, as well as partially on the right, where I presume the backlights are. Is this a sign of a failing backlight? It seems almost normal when the brightness is turned to the max. However, if the screen is on a lower brightness setting or is idle for a while and turns off, and I wake it, the tint appears again, and then fades over time (assuming it is set to max brightness). The darkness of this tint continues to gradually increase over time. It has been a couple of weeks since it started.

There is also the issue of it crashing when going to sleep. This happens when it is unplugged, regardless of whether there is plenty of battery life, while in the process of going into sleep mode. I am uncertain as to whether this is a general issue with laptops, or whether it is even a bad practice. It may be the sudden lack of the surge of power that disrupts the flow of electricity going to the hard drive that produces this effect, but I am uncertain.

Hopefully someone could give me some insight into these problems, as they are becoming extremely irritating.

Lenovo W500. I've only had it for a little over a year.

I have searched, but have been unable to isolate these issues, as they're a bit complex to explain in a search.
