i7 930 vs i7 950 vs i7 2600k - Page 3

It sounds like it's too late, in which case, best of luck, meant sincerely. Good luck with the overclock with the new chip! If you're not losing any money don't sweat it.

Geez, I'm keeping my Q9450 until the end of this year. Now I feel really behind.

if there is something that is worth the update at the end of the year in Q4 Ill upgrade again, seems like the 930 and 950 go for 200+ on ebay easy, thats how much I get the 950 for at the microcenter

the 930 gives you a 22x multiplier and the 950 adds 23x. I would do the swap just to get the extra multiplier for free.

The 950s 23X is an odd multi which works for the i7s as to OC.

However not worth an upgrade to get it and no benefit I've seen
as to OC between chips.

Most of us running the 930 don't even use our 22 multi but run 21x.
920s at 19x.

Shoot, I think I'd trade you my 950 for your 920. I can barley get to 3.9 at the voltage in your sig. I'm still tweaking when i have time, but it's certainly not just setting it 20X200 at 1.3 volts like some have said. (and yes, 190X21 works better) Anyway, that extra multi may not be worth anything if the chip is crappy. You never know what you're gonna get. I've seen lots of guys with worse chips than mine. I feel lucky i got to 4 sometimes. But hey, I'm still learning, maybe it's just me.

Hi,

Keep tinkering and hit the OC forums, you'll get there unless a bad
luck of the draw with the chip.

Probably Bios settings.
What to enable or not and voltage settings.
Just watch the heat.
Once you get close with settings its going to come down to two settings.
CPU & QPI V and heat as to how far you can go with your chip on your cooling.

Research.

920s at 19x.

Oh, I'm not saying I i would trade *MY* chip. I'm saying I would like to have my 930 with the 23x unlocked..In a perfect world that is. If I had a low binner that did not OC worth a crap then I would do the swap.

I guess it's just another multi to play with, especially an odd numbered one. Would be nice to see what kind of OC I could get at 23x - The best 24 hr OC I can get at 22x w/ HT enabled is 3.96 GHz - I tried to get something in the low 4's, but could not get good stability on air, got too hot once I got over 4 GHz using 22x and on top of that I think it's pushing the IMC a little much on the 930. (1800 MHz on the memory @ 3.96)

DIdn't they do something in the later batches of the 930's and subsequent 950's to make it harder to OC over 4 without going mad on the voltage? I vauguely remember a discussion on here about that a little while back..?

Honestly OP i would keep your 930 all together. Shoot my 920 can out clock many 950's.
Its still the same mainstream garbage. Also OP if you have the upgrade itch then why dont you grab a couple more GPUs?

Mainstream garbage? I am not a SB fanboy by any means, but is it faster, more efficient and cooler than your 920 and mine, in both synthetic benchmarks and real world use? Yes. But since you don't like it it must be "garbage"....

I plan to get a 6950 and unlock to 6970 within the next few weeks
