It may have not been as eloquently worded in the blog, but I do believe it said the same thing there.

It really just means whatever comes first; there's no point in setting an artificial limit of 400Mhz when a chip can go much farther before it reaches TDP or it's Thermal limit.

This makes Turbo Core 2.0 have indefinite speed increases as long as neither wall is hit.

Yup, that's what I understand it as....

TDP is determined by how much power the chip is drawing (and probably some calc to estimate how much cooling is required for that draw). It is basically a hard limit from my understanding. Turbo based on TDP would hit the same wall even if the chip was at -30C.

The question then is whether we are allowed to overclock beyond what the Turbo feature provides. I think that is what you are getting at? I know TDP is often exceeded when overclocking, so being limited to that would be a no-no.

You can find ways to avoid TDP though; and still keep clocking up.

Shutting down cores, or just extremely undervolting and down clocking them a long with it depending what segment of the CPU is being pushed hard.

In some cases (like H.264 encoding using x264) you're going to have a high FPU load. Though the APU and Memory Controller are (comparatively) not going to have a high load.

When you reach TDP you're supposed to reach that by stressing every component of the CPU at the same time at max spec'd frequency (IE: 3.3Ghz base clock, not a 3.8Ghz "Turbo" Clock.)

I assume consumer parts can just skip Turbo and overclock directly (much like Nehalem-based i7s).

Even more interesting would be if AMD created an interfacee for users to define Turbo settings. However, this might be overwhelming.

Asus had that setup last gen with P55 Mobo's and K-Series CPU's.

I don't know how much experience you have with AMD chips; but depending on the board maker; you can shut down cores via the BIOS, down clock them extremely, and undervolt them, while overclocking other cores and overvolting them.

It depends on how much power the board maker wants to give you in the BIOS but it is possible.

x264 encoding is integer based. encoding for video is actually historically done via integer processing.

I have had at least one AMD system in my house since 2004. Currently, I have an AMD server and HTPC. I also am familar with power management since I use to use PhenomMsrTweaker.

My question has to do with the automatic Turbo Core 2.0 feature. I was hoping that a user can simply reduce the CPU's temperature and the chip would overclock itself more. That would be ideal and replace overclocking for many.

Doom9 is actually having problems right now. Though I know this; what is the relevance to my statement?

The FPU deals with integer processing.

It may be possible on the consumer side of things; but definitely not the server side as you could potentially send energy costs through the roof with that.
