unraid server build

Thread Starter
Hey guys!
So I am wanting to build an unraid system.
What processor/mobo/ram etc would you recommend? I want to keep this as cheap as possible and at the moment only going to need like 1 2tb drive and maybe another 1 tb drive.

Should I go with UNraid or what would you guys recommend for a NAS or htpc? ONly thing besides music/movie/photo storage is later on I might want to be able to use it as a DVR

I'm using FreeNAS. It's pretty good.

Amahi will do what your looking for,it also has an app(Greyhole) that's like WHS drive extender. As for components if you have any reusable parts laying around they'll more than likely do the job just fine.Otherwise a dual-core(AMD/Intel low-end) and 2GB of ram plus as much storage as you'll need it all that really required for the home environment.

How many drives do you think you'll be using in the long term? If you want to use it as a DVR, then unRAID's bound to be a headache. It's going to be difficult to set it up for DVR. If you have plans to use it as a DVR, stick to vanilla Windows 7 or one of the desktop flavors of Linux.

Hardware, I find the HP Proliant MicroServer to be a very nice Mini-NAS. Caveat, since it uses AMD graphics, you're pretty much forced to go with Windows for OS if you want any chance of using it as HTPC.

Some old hardware that was sitting around. An old Dell Dimension 2400. S478 stuff.

Right now, as a student. I don't have much storage. But 80GB IDE drive. But it's much like the user posted above, Amahi. I have all my music on it, I stream it to iTunes on any computer. SSH/FTP etc etc. Samba.

It's very capable.

Well, if I was to start from scratch what processor would I need, how much memory, etc?

I might like to use it as a dvr in the future so I don't have to get a dvr box from the cable company. As far as how many drives? Probably not that many... i'm guessing I only will need about 4tb and that is in the future.
