Which card for more PPD

Thread Starter
Ive been out of the game for almost a year. Im still trying to catch up on all the new latest and greatest. I stopped folding about the time the GTS 200 series was just being released.

So as of now im checking out my options as far as GPU folding cards. Im just comparing specs, but my outdated knowledge cant decipher whats a good spec and a bad.

I will be most likely running a quad gpu setup, perhaps on water. Just looking cost per PPD. back in the day it was about shader clock and stream proccessors.

Im comparing between these 2 cards. Should i go for the higher shader clock, w/ less sp. Or a lower shader clock, w/ more sp?

Also the power requirements and the # of power inputs(may be able to save some on a psu)

Also do either of the cards excel in OC?

I may be mistaken but I believe higher shaders will get you more PPD.

The 460 can do about 3-6k more than the 450 can but it all depends on the OC. I just got a horrible GTS 450 that I cant oc at all or it will drop to half clocks. Not sure about that model but this should give you an idea.

Spend the extra and get the 460, it can be OC'd further and become one scary great folding card ^^

To average my cards:

450s avg: 8.7k PPD
460s avg: 11.5k PPD

I ended up keeping my 460s

Also, my 1gb card on average only gave me an extra 500 PPD, so if you can get a 768mb card for less, I would go for it (unless you will also use it to game).

460 all the way.

Isn't that a 460 SE though? Don't they have less processor cores than a regular 460? Would that make it worse than a regular 460 at folding, I'm not sure but I think this might be the case.

I would still go with the 460 due to the fact it is faster than the 450

460 hands down. A quad setup would kick folding tush. If the cards are all LC'd and you fold 24/7, you might be able to goose the shaders up to where they exceed 45K combined - and that's a nice neighborhood.

Heck, you could keep one free for gaming or whatever and still be cranking well over 30K PPD.

460 still - even if it is an SE model.

The GTX460 SE has a wider data path for memory, 8 more ROPS, and 256MB more memory and so it would be be faster than the GTX460 768MB. the 768MB card has more cores, but it has less memory, ROPS and data path.

Compare:

GTX460 SE.............288 cores, 256bit memory, 32 ROPs
GTX460 768MB........336 cores, 192bit memory, 24 ROPs
GTX460 1GB............336 cores, 256bit memory, 32 ROPs
