Convince me NOT to buy 3 monitors for eyefinity - Page 6

It all comes down to a few things:

1) Do the majority of your games support (or your favorite(s)) atleast
2) Do you have the money for the monitors + another vid card down the road (you know you'll want one)
3) Can you make use of all the new desktop space?

Everything else is preference. The bezels, you either get used to or not. The space, you either use all the monitors or you don't. I used Eyefinity for a while, but the game I was mainly playing didn't support it naturally (sc2) and I got rid of it. I miss it, and plan on getting either 2d surround or Eyefinity once again when I build a new rig. The space was amazing to have and increased my school productivity, for me at least.

1 card will do you fine, 2 will obviously be better. You shouldn't pickup anything bigger than 23"-24" IPS monitors, but it comes to desk space and personal preference again.

Have fun with whatever you chose

Yup some VERY big name titles show their console-porting when it comes to surround gaming. The whole run of Mass Effect games thus far is utterly unusable in surround gaming in anything other than portrait-Eyefinity. FOV is locked, and the HUD is Vert-....which utterly ruins a good game.

Why would you want to game with 3 monitors?

Nevermind what it says on my sig...lol!

Do it! If the look on your own face after a few rounds of TF2 or BC2 on three screens isn't enough, the look on your friends' face when they first see it will be.

Cons (just saying):
-electricity bill
-loss of some actual desk space
-money could go to new graphics card
-money could go toward WC'ing your rig
-as mentioned, 2 graphics cards would be better for this and every time you upgrade you would need to buy 2 new cards.
-you'll probably be inclined to be on the pc more and for longer periods which would hurt your eyes more, I guess.

Pros:
-it would be pretty awesome
-bragging rights I suppose
-you might enjoy your games more
-increased workspace on the pc desktop could = more productive

I think if I had to money I would go for it. It's really up to you and your wallet (and your significant other if they're attached to your wallet ).

I haven't properly researched it, but is there a projector option out there somewhere?

An obvious con is the money issue. Another already mentioned is the amount of desktop used.
I run 3x21.5" now and used to have 2x23.5 (all at 1080p) so here are my thoughts:

I dropped to the 21.5's for cost, power and size considerations (and set up my wife with the 23.5's--She's happy!) and think the 21.5's are just a little too small.
21.5" @ 1080p makes for some small text, I find I often have to <ctrl>+ often to increase font size (younger eyes may not need this as much...)

I have never NEEDED more than two screens.

The case has to be right at my feet rather than off to the side. I could not route a 6' cable to the 3rd monitor and tried a 10' cable. The 10' would drop out (either go blank or drop in resolution)
(That was on the VGA screen, I have not tried a 10' DVI-HDMI cable yet--monitors only have HDMI and VGA)

As a final (actually penultimate) thought: It was roughly a decade ago I saw Matrix that planted the seeds for multiple monitors, so when it became relatively easy to make 3 monitors, I just had to do it. Certainly haven't regretted it, but just as certainly, have never needed it.

Ok, the final thought: I saw Minority Report was only 4 years later, so hopefully it will be 3 more year or so until the Kinect and its progeny can evolve into something with hands free user interface...

Ever since I upgraded to 3x 28" 1920x1200's I've been in heaven. Dead Space is AMAZING. There have only been 3 games (that I play) that DON'T support 5960x1200. Everyone who see's my 'office' leaves jealous and wanting a setup of their own. DO IT!!!

Not all games are compatible with it. You might be able to set the resolution in-game, but the aspect ratios, interface, everything will be messed up.

Pretty much any game that doesn't allow you to mess with the hud will be a disappointment. (Ex, in BFBC2 the minimap sits right in the middle of my Left-Middle bezels.)

Try before you buy.

eyefinity works best for flight and strategy games. Not so good for FPS because you don't want any obstructions. If you are a quick desktop user or use advanced programs, it will really help your workflow.

yea, i don't think that's possible.

A good source for which games work is this page:

http://www.widescreengamingforum.com...ial_Games_List

Many games can be made to work. Some big name titles that idiot developers made the hud Vert- (like you allude to), such as Bioware and their Mass Effect series are utterly unusable under Eyefinity. And Bioware has openly refused to patch their broken code.

Some like Fallout 3/NV just need some .ini tweaking and maybe a mod or two and you're up and running. Some games also have ultra-widescreen patches that are unofficial and available.
