Best headphones for me?

Thread Starter

Hello, I have been researching a little about a good pair of headphones. I'm willing to spend about $100ish ($130 at the VERY max) on a quality set. This will be mostly for listening to music (trance, electronic, drum & bass...) but also for gaming as well. I don't have an amp and don't know a lot about that... and I don't have a sound card either, just the one on my mobo.

I was thinking about the

or but I don't really know a lot about these.

Also, would you suggest to attach on the headphones (for gaming)?

All the products must be available on Amazon, please.

Thank you so much!

The funny thing about headphones is that the sound quality of them is SO subjective. The best thing to do is to actually listen to some, if you can. On the other hand, I think the Sennheiser HD280 pro is a very good sounding, studio-quality headphone set, at a reasonable price. They have a very balanced sound and can produce the super low frequencies very accurately. Additionally, the high end is crisp but not harsh, and the mid range is not garish/harsh with no weird mid-high spikes. Very good sounding headphones.

The HD280PRO's don't suit their music tastes, nor is it good for gaming or good sounding for the price. A better combo is say an Asus Xonar DG soundcard and the Creative Aurvana Live totalling $130.

If you plan to spend more than $80 on headphones, spend some money on a sound card.

Have you seen the MOD on the HD555's to basically make them the 595's? If not then here it is.

Any clip on mic will do. My clip on mic cost £1.99 and it's perfectly fine.

So out of the HD 280 and the Aurvana Live, which is better for my taste in music (heavy bass electronic/trance/dubstep/drum n bass) + for gaming? And to improve it tons I should definitely get a soundcard (the Xonar DG)? Will I notice much of a difference than the onboard with either of these headphones?

Thanks again for replies

I'd get really good headphones with a soundcard to really benefit. My friend has

. I've listened to them on his onboard and on his soundcard and it made such a huge difference. The sound quality is threw the roof and the base is perfect.

And for an extra $30, is my best bet for a sound card the Asus Xonar DG? Or another?

Has anyone compared a modded 555 to a 595 to see if in fact they have the same performance?

Does the frequency actually go from (555)15-28,000 Hz to (595)12-38,500 Hz?

As I said: Headphone sound is very subjective, but I disagree w/ your assessment. I see these headphones often in recording studio settings, and my friends who are pro recording engineers recommend them. What does THAT say about them? If, however, you like the overbalanced bass sound, then yeah, you probably won't like the sound of the 280 pro because their sound is BALANCED.
