Balanced doesn't mean enjoyable. If you're turned on by the balanced sound, then by all means, go for it. However, if you're one of those people that actually enjoys their music instead of being a snob about how great "balanced headphones" are, then the HD280 isn't a great choice.

555 won't have the type of bass you want from DnB. For symphonies and jazz, 555 sound good. 555 are not great for heavy bass lines in electronic music.

Ok, so I will probably go with the AD700's then... as for a soundcard, is the Asus Xonar DG the best for $30? I'd rather not spend more than $130 for the headphones + soundcard

Seems good to me. Read some reviews on the soundcard and most of them are saying it's a bargain for what you get.

I'm not sure if it is still up there, but I bought a pair of JVC HA-RX900's (I think they're around $50 now) and I absolutely love them. Mind you, I'm no audiophile but I've had a few expensive pairs and a few terrible cheap ones. I love these. They've lasted awhile and have taken some abuse, and seem to be optimal for price/performance ratio.

You can also mod them: http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/...orget-about-it (This guy seems to really love them)

I also don't listen to super quality ripped music, either. A lot of times it is just pandora or cd quality mp3s. It is something that is totally subjective, but I feel for someone like me who does enjoy quality sound, but not an audiophile--these perform admirably.

Thanks everybody! I'm going with the Audio Technica ATH-AD700 headphones with the Asus Xonar DG sound card... they've both gotten great reviews on headfi, overclok3d, and techradar

thanks for all the help

sorry to reopen this, but when i install the soundcard, should i plug in my speakers to it (logitech z2300's) and then plug my headphones into the jack inside the controller that goes with the z2300's, or use onboard sound for the speakers and the soundcard for the headphones? noob question...

thanks

p.s. also, i just want to make sure... is the xonar dg compatible with my mobo--m4a87td evo? i just put it in the pci-e slot?

You could do it either way. Although, plugging the headphone directly into the Xonar may be slightly better.

The Xonar DG is a PCI card, not a PCIe card. Put the card in the light blue slots on your motherboard.

Plug the AD700 directly to your the Xonar. Don't plug it through the Z-2300 as it will degrade the sound quality(there's hiss noise).

Xonar DG is PCI; I'm sure your mobo have extra PCI slots.

Ohh, ok. That makes sense. But for my speakers, should I have them plugged into the onboard sound? Will that work ok, so I don't have to keep unplugging/replugging my speakers if I want to take my headphones off?

Thanks for the replies
