Plasma Questions

Thread Starter
So I'm about to purchase a Plasma 42" of some brand tomorrow depending on what they have in stock, and I've never owned a Plasma. Only a 32" LCD.

I've been reading about precautions and the break in time and all of that, but my question is a lot of my movies I watch are streamed from my PC and on my current TV are watched in 16:9 and it's almost always letterboxed so there is black borders on the top and bottom.

I've read this may be a problem with a Plasma if I get one. What exactly do I do about this, or do I wait until the break in period is over and if I watch movies like this it will be fine?

Does the black border on the top and bottom cause problems or if I switch between movies and regular HD Cable that takes up all the screen will it be fine?

I'd go for an LCD because they last longer and alot of plasma's get the image stuck on the screen aka screen burn (this has happened to my mother in law's tv and a few friends aswell), they use more power and get hot. I have a 42" LG LF7700 which is full HD, alot of the plasma's I see cost more and arent full HD.

Its worth getting a 1080p because the image quality is alot better when playing games, blu ray etc and they are getting cheaper (I read your other post where you posted those two 720p tv's), when I used to play my 360 on my dad's 42" Samsung 720p plasma you notice the difference straight away between my 1080p LG and his 720p Samsung, the black levels and darker colours look better on the plasma but I couldnt see much difference between plasma and lcd, I suppose you could turn the contrast down abit on an lcd and it should look the same.

Heres some specs on the tv I have: http://www.avforums.com/forums/lg-fo...00-thread.html

Screen burn occurs when someone leaves a video on pause or displays a image for a long time. That's the only time when you see screen burning like that.

Plasma's give deeper blacks than LCD's and LED screens. But the problem with Plasma is that it uses more power not to mention the fact that Plasma's have a lower amount of life than the other respective technologies.

what brand/model are you buying?
I have a viera plasma and a bravia lcd...the plasma has more vivid/loud/ in your face color vs a good lcd...although I like the lcd picture and is not lacking...screen burn never happened on the plasma I use nor has it ever required a burn in...this may be applicable on oldER versions (circa 2005-2007ish) > I could be wrong as there might be some brands still making old tech plasmas...plasmas run hot and use more watts...lcds run cool and I would assume uses less watts (cfl / LED)

I'm now looking at a 50" Panasonic Viera, which I read has a new Plasma Panel which is I guess what you're talking about.

Screen size is what matters most, which is why I'm choosing Plasma. I have an LCD TV and it's nothing special. I can get a 50" Plasma 1080P for the price that I can get a 37" maybe 40" LCD. To me that extra size is way more important.

Im not sure what the Plasma panel is (?Infinite Black panel)...must be the new tech
although I like the fact the Viera I got has Vieracast (internet connectivity w/o Netflix > boooo)
If I can sum up the Viera...it would definitely be a Videophiles choice...Im not sure if the newer ones have less glary yellows...its not noticable till someone mentions it...

edit > the newer one claims to have more accurate representation of blacks...mine initially needed tweaking...I assume this one does too / TC-P50X1

Hi,

i have been a plasma owners for long time now and also have LCDs, i prefer the picture of the plasmas as they did have better black levels.

with new plasma you dont need to worry as much with image burn, I would say keep contast and brightness lower until you have done around at least 50 hours of viewing then you can raise the settings.

you also get options to prevent/reduce image burn. I also recently purchased the Panasonic G20 for my sister and was very surprised with the picture quality (very good) but i still prefer the PQ of my Kuro which i have going though a DVDO edge video processor (buy the way whcih will give you better control over boarders etc as it give options to stretch picture is small increments)

ive had a plasma for about 2 years? or so and ive never had a problem with the screen or anything and i use it for about 2-6 hours a day ( got a samsung pn50b860). Although like others say people say things about burn in and such, now days its not such a big issue with things like pixel shift. And if you do have a burn in just use tv scrolling for 20 min (in the options usually) and it goes away. IMO the video quality of a plasma is much better then a lcd and the colors are much more vibrant then led lcd tvs.
